Walls and floors get chosen on the same trip.

Usually they are not. The floor is picked in a showroom, the wall is picked six weeks later off a phone, and the two first meet on the day the boxes land in the garage. That is how a backsplash ends up fighting the floor underneath it, or a fireplace surround pulls warm against a cool gray plank.

Here both sit in one building, under the same lights, on the same afternoon. Put them side by side on the counter and the decision takes minutes instead of a month. Tile in the showroom comes from Virginia Tile, DalTile, MSI and Emser, and selection moves through the year, so ask what is in the racks the week you come in.

The two wall categories.

Wall tile

A wall is where glazed ceramic belongs. It is softer, lighter and easier to cut than porcelain, and because nothing is ever walking on it, floor wear ratings stop being the deciding factor. Freed from traffic, wall tile carries glazes, edges and shapes that would not last a season underfoot. That is also the one rule worth remembering: tile rated for a floor can go up onto a wall, but tile made for a wall cannot come down onto a floor. The rating is printed on the box, and someone in the showroom will read it with you.

Brick and stone

Brick and stone run the other way. Nothing about them is uniform, and that variation is the reason people want them on a fireplace surround, an accent wall or the back of a range. Both are heavier than tile. Natural stone is quarried rather than manufactured, so every piece is different and every piece is porous, which means sealing and pH neutral cleaners for the life of the wall. What sits on the racks changes through the year, so ask what is on hand before a room gets planned around one piece.

Matching a wall to a floor without guessing.

• Bring the floor. A sample, a leftover plank or a clear photo of what is already down, held against the wall material rather than remembered.
• Settle grout at the same time. Matched grout makes a wall read as one surface. Contrasting grout draws every joint and makes the pattern the point.
• Watch the undertone, not the color. Warm white against a cool gray floor is the common mismatch, and it does not show up in a four inch chip.
• Choose the sheen on purpose. Gloss on the wall over a matte floor is a real look. The version nobody likes is the one that happened by accident.
• Ask how the pair reads in your room, not just on the counter. Showroom light is even and steady. A north facing bathroom at 4pm is not.

If the floor is settled, bring it in and the wall becomes a short conversation. If neither is settled, start with the floor anyway.
