Why we wrote these down

Jonah and Audra Paup have been answering the same set of questions across the counter for years, and so did Jonah's father Bobby before that. The Paups have been a flooring family since the early 70s. After enough repetitions you notice that the questions are remarkably consistent, that the honest answer is usually more useful than the sales answer, and that almost nobody publishes the honest one.

So these pages are the counter conversation, written down. Each one takes a single question and settles it. The short answer comes first, in a box at the top, and it is written to be complete on its own: if you read only that paragraph and close the page, you should leave with the right idea. Everything after it is the detail, the exceptions, and the part where we tell you what a specification number does not tell you.

What you will not find here

No prices. Not because we are cagey about them, but because a number attached to a room nobody has seen is a guess dressed up as information. What a floor costs depends on the square footage, what has to come out first, what the subfloor needs, the pattern, and how many transitions the room has. Our page on what decides a quote walks through every one of those factors without inventing a single figure, and the free in-home measure is where a real number comes from.

No invented statistics either. You will not find a return-on-investment percentage, an industry average lifespan, or a survey figure quoted from memory on any of these pages. Where the honest answer is that it depends on the specific product, we say so and tell you where on the product the specification lives. That is less satisfying than a confident number and considerably more useful when you are standing in a showroom holding two samples.

How these fit with the rest of the site

An answer page settles one question. When you want the bigger picture, the rest of the site is organised around the other ways people think about flooring. The room pages start from the space you are flooring and work out what fits it. The comparison pages take two materials head to head and give a verdict by room. The questions a page cannot answer

Some questions genuinely do not have a general answer, and it is worth saying which ones so you are not left hunting for a page that should not exist. Anything that starts with the word my usually falls into this group. Will hardwood work in my basement depends on what your slab is doing, how the space is conditioned, and whether water has ever come in. Is my subfloor flat enough depends on a straightedge laid across it. Can this go over what I already have depends on what is already there and how well it is stuck down. These are not evasions. They are the questions where a confident published answer would be the least trustworthy thing on the site, and where a page that pretended otherwise would cost you more than it saved you. Anyone who answers them sight unseen is guessing, and a guess about a floor gets expensive underneath you rather than on the page.

What we can do on a page is tell you what the answer will depend on, so you know what you are looking at when somebody comes to measure. That is the shape of most of these pages: here is the mechanism, here is what changes it, here is the part that needs eyes on the room. The in-home measure is where the specific answer gets settled, it is free, and nobody is going to arrive with a contract to sign.
