What does an AC rating mean on laminate?
It's the durability class printed on the box, AC1 through AC5. The number reports how the plank's wear layer held up in tests for abrasion, impact, staining and burns, so it's a resistance spec rather than a style or a thickness spec. What should decide it is the real traffic in the room the floor is going into.

What you gain by going up a class
Move from AC3 to AC4 and the aluminum oxide wear layer is standing up to a harder version of the same tests, more abrasion, more impact, more staining before the surface gives. How that class actually gets tested is its own subject. What you feel in the house is a longer stretch before the traffic lane in a busy room starts to show it, and a floor that shrugs off more of what a family and a dog put through it, which a household with a dog tends to care about most.
The useful part is that the class is printed on the box at all. It is a published spec you can read off the packaging instead of a judgement you have to make by eye, and eye is not reliable here. Two planks that look nothing alike can carry the same class, and the one that feels tougher under a thumbnail at the counter is not necessarily the one that tested better. The number is the only thing on the sample that reports how the surface performed rather than how it looks.
Where a higher class buys nothing
In a room that never sees hard traffic, the extra resistance does nothing you will ever notice. A closet, or a formal room used a handful of times a month, gets no visible benefit from AC5 over AC3. Headroom a room will never test is not a safety margin, it is a spec that never comes into play, and the floor looks identical either way. Rooms where the higher class wins
- A kitchen, entry or mudroom, where grit, spills and daily traffic stack up against the surface constantly.

Rooms where the lower class is the right call
- A bedroom or a guest room, where feet are mostly bare and traffic is light.
- A formal living room or dining room used occasionally rather than daily.
- Any closet, where nothing walks through it except the occasional trip for shoes.
The honest downside of both choices
A higher class doesn't fix a moisture problem, and it doesn't make a floor waterproof. It only buys resistance to wear, dents, staining and burns, which is a different axis than water entirely and is covered on its own on the water resistant laminate page. And a lower class isn't a mistake in the rooms where it belongs. It isn't under-building the floor, it's matching the spec to a room that will never test it.
It's also not a style decision, even though the two get lumped together in conversation.
