What does an AC rating measure?
An AC rating is an abrasion class, a number in the AC series reporting how a laminate surface performed in a standard wear test. A weighted wheel wrapped in abrasive paper turns against the plank until the printed decor first breaks through. The revolutions it survives set the class printed on the box. Impact, stain and burn are graded separately and do not change that digit.
Every laminate box carries a class in the AC series, and most people read it as a general quality score. It is narrower than that, and being narrow is what makes it useful. The class is the result of one specific laboratory test performed on the face of the plank. Knowing what happens during that test tells you which of your rooms the number is speaking about, and which ones it is silent on.
The wheel, the paper and the wear point
The Abrasion Class scale comes out of EN 13329, the European standard written for laminate floor coverings, and the heart of it is a machine rather than an opinion. A piece of the plank is clamped flat and two weighted wheels wrapped in a specified abrasive paper are turned against the surface, tracing a ring. The paper is replaced on a set interval so the abrasive never dulls, because a worn strip would flatter the sample and quietly inflate the result.
The technicians are watching for one event. At some revolution count the clear overlay wears thin enough that the printed decor underneath first shows through inside that ring. That is the initial wear point, and it is what the class is built on. The test carries on past it to the point where the pattern is obliterated, but it is the first break through that decides the letter and digit you read on the carton. The revolution thresholds for each class are set in the standard, and they are printed nowhere on the box, which is exactly why the class exists as shorthand.
Abrasion is only part of the suite, and this is where the number gets misread. The same standard puts the plank through impact from a dropped ball, resistance to a list of household staining agents, and a lit cigarette held against the surface, which is where the burn language on the packaging originates. Those are graded on their own scales against their own thresholds. The AC digit comes from the abrasion result alone, and nothing an impact or a stain test produces moves it up or down. What the full set of results feeds is the use class, a separate rating describing whether a product is built for domestic or for commercial service, and the two get quoted interchangeably at a counter when they are not the same thing. On some North American boxes you will also see ANSI/NALFA LF-01 certification cited. That is a separate program with its own battery of tests, not another name for the same number.
Where the resistance actually comes from
The clear layer on top of a laminate plank is melamine resin loaded with aluminum oxide, a mineral harder than most of what gets walked in on the bottom of a shoe. The class is a proxy for how much of that mineral is in the overlay and how evenly it is distributed through it. More mineral means more revolutions before the decor gives up, and it also means a surface that is slightly harder to keep looking glossy, which is a trade nobody mentions at the counter. This is worth holding onto, because it explains the boundary of the whole rating. AC describes a face. It is a specification about the top fraction of a millimeter of the board and nothing below it.
The steps are larger than the counting suggests
The scale reads like counting, which invites the assumption that AC4 is a slight improvement on AC3 the way a size ten shoe is a slight improvement on a nine. It is not built that way. On a residential laminate carton the classes you will actually meet run AC1 to AC5, with heavier classes reserved for commercial service. The standard sets a revolution threshold at each class and those thresholds step up in jumps, not in even increments, so moving up one class buys a substantially tougher face rather than a marginal one. What that shorthand cannot know is what your particular room does. Two houses with the same floor plan can present entirely different threats to a surface: one has a golden retriever and a gravel driveway, the other has an adult couple and a garage entry with a mat. The class is a ceiling on abrasion, not a prediction about your hallway.
The four things the class is silent about
Every one of these has ended a laminate floor early, and not one of them appears anywhere in the abrasion result.
- Water. The abrasion test is dry from start to finish. Nothing in the class describes what the wood fiber core does when moisture reaches it, which is the subject of the water resistant laminate entry.
- The joint. A tough face sitting over a soft core still has its locking profile milled into that core, and the core decides whether the joint stays tight in a wide room. Core density is the specification for that, and it is a different number entirely.
- Edges. Abrasion is a flat surface test, so it says nothing about a beveled edge meeting a dropped pan. That failure is a chip, and whether a chipped plank can be fixed is a separate question with a separate answer.
- Sheen. A floor can hold its printed pattern perfectly and still go dull in a walking lane. Gloss loss is usually what people mean when they say a floor looks worn out, and it happens long before the decor is anywhere near breaking through.
How a floor in St. Charles County really wears
The lab abrades a neat ring at a constant load. A house does nothing of the sort. Grit walked in from a driveway or a job site acts as loose abrasive underfoot, it concentrates in the lanes people actually walk, and it works on a strip a few feet wide while the rest of the room stays untouched. That is why a worn laminate floor almost never looks uniformly worn. It looks fine everywhere except the path from the garage door to the kitchen.
Two practical consequences follow. The first is that mats at the doors off the driveway and the garage take grit out of the system before it reaches the lane. The second is that surface wear on laminate is permanent, because the floor cannot be sanded back, and the refinishing question has an honest one word answer. Choosing the class for the lane rather than for the room average is the way to plan around both.
Checking it yourself before you commit
This is a specification you can verify rather than take on trust, and it takes about a minute.
- Ask for the spec sheet, not the sample board. Sample boards are cut from production and rarely carry the class. The sheet and the carton do.
- Look for the class written as AC and a digit. Phrases like heavy duty or commercial grade printed alone, with no class beside them, are marketing rather than a test result.
- Check that the class is stated for the product you are ordering rather than for the collection. Ranges sometimes span two classes across finishes.
- If two planks look identical, the class is often the specification that separates them, and it is the honest way to compare them.
- Bring the room to the conversation: dogs, driveway grit, chairs that get dragged, a garage entry. Those decide the class more than square footage does.

No. Vinyl is graded on the thickness of its wear layer, measured in mils, which is a completely different specification arrived at a completely different way. Comparing an AC class to a mil count tells you nothing useful. The vinyl side is covered on the wear layer entry, and the two categories are compared directly on the vinyl and laminate matchup.
