What actually breaks when a plank chips

How far that break goes decides everything else. A shallow chip stops inside the wear layer or just grazes the printed layer, and the picture underneath is still mostly there. A deeper one punches through the print into the fiberboard core, and the core is not colored to match anything. It is a pale, fibrous material meant to be covered, not seen, and once it is exposed the difference between a fixed spot and an obvious one comes down to exactly how far the impact traveled.
What that means for you, depending on the depth
A shallow chip is the easy case. The printed layer is intact or nearly so, so a color-matched repair fills the gap and reads as a small blemish rather than a wound. A deep chip through to the core is a harder sell, because there is no printed pattern left in that spot to match against, only bare fiberboard. Filler can level the surface and seal it, but it will not reproduce a wood grain that was never printed there in the first place. That is the point where replacing the plank, rather than patching it, gives the better result, which is a different repair than whether a whole floor can be sanded and refinished.
The failure mode: why a chip left alone tends to get worse
The fiberboard core is wood fiber pressed under heat, and wood fiber left exposed does what wood fiber does. It takes on moisture at that one open point faster than anywhere else on the floor, because the wear layer that was protecting it is gone. Left through a few seasons of mopping and humidity, a soft or slightly raised edge at the chip is a common result, and the chip itself tends to catch more debris and chip further at the edges. How to check it yourself
Run a fingernail across the damaged spot. If it glides over a smooth, hard surface, you are still inside the wear layer and looking at a shallow chip. If the nail catches on something soft and fuzzy, you have reached the fiberboard, and that plank is a replacement candidate rather than a fill job. A raking light from a low angle, a flashlight held sideways near a window, shows the depth better than overhead light does.
Location matters as much as depth. A chip at a kitchen entry where pans and dropped tools land, or by a door where boots and toolboxes come through, sits in the zone that takes the most repeat impact in the house, and a fix there is worth doing properly rather than once. A chip tucked under where a rug or a piece of furniture normally sits is a different, lower-stakes decision.
Filling it versus replacing it
