How long it takes

It depends on the rooms. Two bedrooms of carpet is quick. A main level with stairs, closets, angled walls and three different transitions takes longer, because each of those gets measured on its own rather than guessed from the room next to it. It is one visit. Ask when you schedule and we will tell you what to expect for your job.

What gets measured, and why

Square footage is the smallest part of it. The measure exists to find the things that change the material list, the labor, or the recommendation itself.

• Room dimensions, plus closets, alcoves, angled walls and anything the tape has to work around.
• Doorways, and how much room is left under each door once the new floor adds height.
• Thresholds and transitions, meaning every place one floor meets another.
• Stairs. Treads, risers, landings and nosings get counted individually, because stairs carry more material and more labor per foot than a flat room.
• The subfloor. Wood or concrete, how flat it is, how dry it is, and how sound it feels underfoot.
• Layout. Which direction the planks should run, where seams will fall, and how much waste the pattern carries.

The last two are the ones that move a price. Whatever preparation the floor needs gets written into the quote at the measure, rather than turning up as a surprise on install day.

Transitions get decided at your house

This is the part homeowners think least about beforehand and notice most afterward. Where new plank meets the tile in the bath. Where carpet stops at a bedroom door. Where a floor meets a stair nosing, or steps down into a sunroom. Two materials of different thickness have to meet somewhere, and that meeting is either a decision or an accident.

Standing in the doorway with a sample in each hand is the only good way to settle it. We do that at the measure, in your light, next to your trim and the floors you are keeping, before anything is ordered.

What to clear, and what to leave alone

You do not need to empty the house for the measure. Aim for clear enough to see and measure.

• Worth clearing: a path to the walls, the floor of each closet, loose rugs, toys, shoes, floor lamps and small side tables.
• Not worth clearing: beds, sofas, dressers, the refrigerator. We can measure around all of it.
• Worth doing: put the dog somewhere with a closed door between it and the front door.

Furniture comes up at the measure for a different reason, because install day needs the rooms clear. Ask us what should be out of each room and who is handling it when you schedule the installation, and you will have a straight answer well before the date. Tell us what the room has been through

A measure is also a conversation. A basement on a slab. A spot that leaked once. Radiant heat under the floor. A squeak you stopped noticing years ago. A dog with long nails, or a laundry room that has flooded. Say all of it out loud while we are standing there. It can change which product we recommend, and changing a recommendation is a great deal cheaper than changing a floor.

What happens next

The measure sits in the middle of our eight steps. Consultation and product selection come first, usually in the showroom. The measure feeds the detailed quote. After that comes scheduling, preparation, expert installation, a post-installation inspection and clean-up. Nothing is ordered until the quote is in your hands and you have said yes to it.
