The doorway is what usually decides it
Thickness stops being a comfort preference and starts being arithmetic the moment the floor reaches the edge of the room. Every plank floor eventually meets something else, a hallway tile, a carpeted bedroom, an exterior door, and the height difference at that meeting point is what a transition strip has to absorb. A thicker plank raises the finished floor higher than a thinner one, and if that height was not planned for, it shows up as a lip at the threshold, a door that no longer swings clear of the floor, or an appliance that will not roll out from under a counter. Of every factor on this page, this is the one that most often changes a decision that looked settled in the showroom.

Bring the adjoining floor to the measure, not just the sample
The single most useful thing to bring to the showroom, beyond a sample you like, is a measurement or a photo of what the new floor has to meet: the carpet in the hallway, the tile at the kitchen edge, the slab in the basement stairwell.
