What indoor humidity is best for wood floors?

Most wood floors, solid or engineered, do best between 30 and 50 percent relative humidity, with the swing between winter and summer kept gradual instead of sudden. Wood is constantly trading moisture with the air, so a steady range keeps that movement inside the gaps built for it. A small hygrometer placed away from vents tells you where your house actually sits.

Wood never really stops moving with the air around it

Every board in a wood floor is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs and gives up water vapor as the air around it gets more or less humid, the same way a wooden door sticks in a humid house and swings free in a dry one. Humid air pushes moisture into the wood and the board swells very slightly across its width. Dry air pulls that moisture back out and the board narrows. That is not a defect. It is what wood does, on every floor, every day, for as long as the floor is down.

It happens on solid hardwood and on engineered hardwood alike, just to different degrees. Engineered flooring is built from a cross layered core specifically because that construction resists movement better than a single solid board, which is part of why it is the usual answer over a slab or in a lower level. It still moves. It just moves less.

The range that keeps that movement small

Most wood flooring, solid and engineered, is designed to live inside a fairly narrow window indoors, and our hardwood page gives the band worth holding to, roughly 30 to 50 percent relative humidity through the year. Manufacturers write their installation instructions around the same window, and it is also the window a floor should be acclimating toward before installation even starts. Acclimation has its own answer, and it only works if the house stays inside a normal range afterward too.

The part that gets less attention is the rate of travel rather than the endpoints. A house that drifts from the humid end of that band toward the dry end across a whole fall gives every board weeks to give up moisture evenly. The same trip made in a few days, because a furnace came on hard after a mild stretch or a dehumidifier ran nonstop in a closed room, packs the identical change into a far shorter window. Wood does not move moisture through itself quickly, so the outer edges of a board reach the new condition well before the middle does, and that gap between edge and center is the stress that shows.

What happens when the house swings past it

Two failure modes show up, and they run in opposite directions. Dry winter air pulls moisture back out and every board narrows a little across its width, which is winter gapping, with the full mechanism there. Run the other way, and a damp spell or a leak pushes moisture in faster at the edges of a board than at its center so the edges rise, which is the subject of why wood floors cup or crown. Neither is a defect. Both are a floor responding correctly to what the air did, which is why the fix is steadier air and not a different floor.

Checking your own house takes one small tool

A small hygrometer is the tool, and where you put it matters. Keep it away from supply vents, exterior doors and windows in direct sun, all of which read a spot rather than the room. Somewhere central and away from drafts, at roughly floor to waist height, gives a reading that reflects what the wood is actually sitting in. Check it a few times over a week rather than trusting one reading, since a single number does not tell you whether the house is climbing, falling or holding steady, and it is the trend that matters more than the exact figure.

A seasonal pattern is normal. Small gaps that open every winter and close back up every summer are the floor doing what it is built to do. What is worth a call is movement that shows up in one spot rather than across the whole room, since a localized cup near a kitchen sink, an exterior door or a bathroom usually points to a water source rather than a whole-house humidity problem, and it needs a different conversation than a humidifier.

A basement slab is a different problem, not the same one

Everything above is about the air in a room. A concrete slab below grade adds a second, separate moisture path straight up through the concrete itself, and it does that whether the air in the room is humid or not. That is a different mechanism with a different answer, and the basement page covers it in full. Do not treat a below-grade cupping problem as a humidifier problem. They are not the same story.

It will make the swing smaller, which is the goal, but it will not remove seasonal movement entirely because wood is always going to respond to whatever the air is doing. A humidifier that keeps the house from getting bone dry in January is worth running. Expecting zero gaps year round is not a realistic target for a wood floor, and any installer telling you otherwise is not being straight with you.

Not for the same reason. Luxury vinyl plank and tile are not hygroscopic, so a swing in relative humidity does not make them expand or contract the way it does a wood floor. Wide temperature swings can still affect any material's subfloor or adhesive over time, but the humidity-driven movement this page describes is specific to wood and engineered wood construction.

Central air controls temperature, not humidity, and the two are not the same thing. A house can hold a perfectly comfortable temperature year round and still swing from bone dry in January to noticeably humid in July if nothing is managing moisture specifically. A hygrometer is the only way to know what your air conditioning is not already handling.
