What causes floors to squeak?

A sequence, not a single event. Wood in the subfloor shrinks slightly over its first heating seasons, and a fastener that was originally tight against the panel and the joist loosens just enough to allow tiny movement under weight. That movement is the rubbing you hear. How tightly and how thoroughly the subfloor was fastened at construction is the step that decides whether the shrinkage ever turns into a sound.

A squeak feels like it appears out of nowhere. It never does. By the time you hear it, a sequence has already been running for months or years, and it started the day the subfloor was fastened down.

Step one: the subfloor gets fastened, with lumber that still has moisture in it

Plywood or OSB subfloor panels get nailed or screwed to the floor joists during construction, and at that point the wood in both the panel and the joists still carries some moisture from the mill and the framing yard. The fastening is tight, panel pulled flush against joist, nothing loose anywhere. Nobody hears a squeak in a brand new house, and that is the baseline everything else is measured against.

Step two: the first heating seasons dry the wood out

Once the house is enclosed and heated, the framing lumber gives up moisture to the drier indoor air, the same trade that shows up as gapping in a hardwood floor. Framing lumber shrinks slightly as it dries, and a joist or a subfloor panel that was cut and fastened at one moisture level is not the same physical size a year or two later. This step is normal and happens in nearly every house. It is also the step that quietly sets up everything after it.

Step three: a fastener that used to be tight is no longer tight

As the wood shrinks, a nail or screw that once held panel firmly against joist can end up sitting in a slightly larger gap than it started in. The fastener has not failed and has not backed all the way out. It has simply stopped doing the one job that matters, holding two layers of wood pinned tight against each other with zero play between them. This is the decisive step in the whole sequence. A subfloor fastened thoroughly and with enough fasteners at construction rarely reaches this point in any noticeable way, even after normal shrinkage. A subfloor fastened light, or with fasteners spaced too far apart, reaches it reliably, which is why some houses squeak within a couple of years and others go decades without a sound.

Step four: weight on that spot flexes the tiny gap

Once there is play between panel and joist, a footstep is enough to flex the panel down against the loose fastener, and that flex is where the sound is generated, either the panel rubbing against the fastener shank or two layers of wood rubbing against each other at the seam. It only happens under load, which is why a squeak is usually reproducible at one exact spot rather than random. Why it gets worse instead of better

Once a fastener has loosened, nothing about normal use tightens it back up. Every heating season the house goes through repeats the shrink-and-swell cycle, and each cycle is a chance for a marginal fastener to loosen a little further or for a new one nearby to join it. That is the whole reason an older house tends to accumulate more squeaks over time rather than fewer, and why a squeak that started as one quiet spot under the rug can turn into several over the years.

Almost never. A squeak is a fastening issue, a small amount of play between a panel and a joist, not a sign the floor is unsafe or losing structural capacity. A structural problem tends to show up as noticeable flex, sag or unevenness underfoot, which is a separate condition from a sound at one spot.

Because the wood in the subfloor is still trading moisture with the air, the same movement that drives the original loosening. A borderline fastener can behave differently at the dry end of winter than at the humid end of summer, which is why some squeaks come and go with the season rather than staying constant.

It depends entirely on what is done at the subfloor underneath it, not on the new floor itself. A new floor installed directly over an unaddressed loose panel generally does not fix or worsen the underlying issue, it just sits on top of it, which is why the subfloor gets checked before installation rather than after.
