A subfloor can be dead flat and still squeak, and it can be silent and still be noticeably out of level. Solving each one asks something different of the house, and it is worth understanding the honest tradeoff on both sides before deciding how far to take it.

What is actually making the noise

A squeak is friction, almost always between the plywood or OSB panel and the joist underneath it, or between the panel and a fastener that has backed out slightly over years of foot traffic and seasonal wood movement. Weight pushes the panel down, the loose fastener or the gap lets it move a fraction, and that tiny motion against wood or metal makes the sound. It is rarely a sign that anything is failing structurally. It is a sign that something under the floor is no longer held as tightly as it was the day it was built.

Fixing it at the source: what you gain

Re-securing the subfloor to the joist under the exact spot that moves stops the squeak permanently, because it addresses the cause rather than covering it. Done from below, through a basement or crawlspace ceiling, a specific fastener draws the panel back down tight against the joist without touching the finished floor above it at all. Done from above, it means locating the joist precisely and running a screw down through the subfloor and into it, then patching the small hole that leaves. Either way, once the fastening is solid again, the noise generally does not come back in that spot.

This approach asks for access, and access is not always available. A finished ceiling below the room, or a slab with no crawlspace at all, closes off the from-below option entirely. Working from above through an existing finished floor usually means removing at least a section of it, which turns a small annoyance into real labor and a repair that has to be patched invisibly afterward. It also takes genuine diagnostic work, walking the room slowly to find the exact board and the exact spot, because fixing the wrong joist bay leaves the actual squeak untouched a few feet away. Bridging it instead: what you gain

Building up a new layer over the existing subfloor, whether that is a leveling pour, a plywood overlay, or simply a rigid material that does not flex the way the old panel does, sidesteps the access problem completely. Nothing below the surface has to be reached or opened up. A stiff, rigid-core product in particular resists transmitting minor movement the way a thinner or more flexible material would, which is often enough to quiet a mild squeak without anyone going near the joists. It is faster, less invasive, and usually the only realistic option when there is no way to get underneath the room.

What bridging costs you instead

The movement is still there. Bridging changes what the movement sounds like or whether it is noticeable at all, but it does not stop the panel from shifting against the joist underneath. A loose fastener left alone can continue working looser over time, and a squeak that is merely quieted rather than fixed can return, sometimes louder, once the new floor and its underlayment have compressed and settled in. It is also not the right answer for a floor that has real spring or give underfoot along with the noise, since that combination points toward something more than a loose fastener and is worth having looked at directly rather than built over.

Which rooms and conditions favor each side

A finished basement or an open crawlspace underneath makes the source repair worth doing, since the access that makes it fast and simple is already there. A slab-on-grade addition or a room with no access from below tips honestly toward bridging, because the invasive option simply is not on the table without opening a ceiling elsewhere in the house. A single, mild squeak in a low-traffic hallway is a reasonable candidate to bridge and move on from. A floor with give as well as noise, or squeaks that keep multiplying across a room, deserves the direct fix, or at minimum a closer look, before anything new goes down over it.
