What is a concrete slab?

A concrete slab is a poured, cured mass of concrete. The common case under a floor is a slab on grade, poured in direct contact with the ground, and that contact never really ends: long after the pour looks and feels dry the slab keeps releasing water vapor upward, and its surface was never poured perfectly flat.

Every finished floor eventually sits on top of something, and in a slab-on-grade home or a basement, that something is a concrete slab. Not every slab touches the earth, since the structural deck under a condo is concrete too, but the slab that changes a flooring decision is almost always the one poured on grade. It looks inert once it has cured. It behaves like a permanent chemical process that never fully stops, and understanding what it is actually doing underneath a new floor is the difference between a room that stays flat and quiet and one that comes back as a warranty call.

Curing is a chemical reaction, not drying

Poured concrete does not dry the way a puddle dries. It cures, a chemical reaction between cement and water called hydration, and hydration keeps consuming water for months after the surface is hard enough to walk on. A slab that already feels solid underfoot is nowhere near finished with that reaction, and the water the mix never bound into the concrete has to go somewhere. Most of it leaves upward, through the surface, as vapor, whether anyone is watching for it or not.

That upward path does not close once the slab gets old. A house built decades ago still sits on concrete in direct contact with the earth underneath it, and that earth carries moisture year round regardless of the weather on any given day. The slab is not failing when it does this. It is behaving exactly the way a mass of concrete in contact with the ground always behaves, and a floor going on top of it has to be chosen and installed with that ongoing behavior in mind rather than against it.

What that means once you're choosing a floor

Two things about a slab decide what can go directly on it: how much vapor it is still releasing, and how flat it actually is. Neither one shows up by looking at it. A slab can look and feel bone dry and still be moving enough moisture to loosen an adhesive or cup a hardwood board a year later, and a slab can look level to the eye while sitting noticeably out of flat across a doorway, which is enough to telegraph through a rigid floor as a soft spot or a visible dip.

Those two questions get answered separately rather than assumed together. A slab can pass on flatness and still need a vapor barrier under vinyl or an underlayment system under hardwood, and a slab that is dry enough for anything can still need a self-leveling pour before a rigid floor goes down over it. The failure mode nobody sees coming

Floors that fail over a slab almost never fail because the material itself was wrong in isolation. They fail because the slab got treated as neutral ground, no testing, no barrier, no leveling, on the assumption that concrete that looks fine is fine. What actually shows up months or a year later:

  • Cupping or gapping in solid hardwood laid directly on a slab that was still releasing vapor
  • An adhesive bond that lets go under sheet vinyl or tile, often starting at one edge and spreading from there
  • A hollow-sounding spot or a seam that has visibly shifted, tracing back to a low or high area nobody leveled before install
  • A white, chalky bloom on an exposed slab edge called efflorescence, mineral residue left behind as water evaporates through the surface

Checking it yourself before the measure

You cannot run a lab test in your living room, and you do not need to. A few honest checks tell you enough to have a useful conversation at the free in-home measure.

  • Tape a square of clear plastic sheeting to the slab, seal every edge, and check it the next day. Beading or a darkened ring on the underside is a sign of active vapor movement.   • Set a level or a straightedge across the floor in a few spots, especially near doorways and wherever a slider or patio door meets the slab. Daylight showing under the straightedge is your flatness answer.
  • Ask when the slab was poured. A slab poured in the past several weeks is still curing and still shedding water faster than an older one, which changes the timeline for anything installed on it.
  • Look for a sealer or coating already on the surface. A previous coating changes how a new adhesive or leveling compound bonds, and it is worth mentioning at the measure rather than discovering it under the old flooring.

There is no single number that applies to every slab, because cure time depends on the mix, the weather during the pour and the humidity in the space since. What matters is testing the slab's moisture output before installing rather than going by a calendar guess, which is exactly what the in-home measure is for on new construction.

Yes. A slab in contact with the ground moves moisture upward for as long as it exists, not only while it is new. An older slab that has never caused a problem can still be actively transmitting vapor. It has simply been paired with materials and adhesives that tolerated it, which is a different thing from being dry.

It becomes a problem when the variation is enough to leave a soft spot underfoot or telegraph through a hard, thin surface, which is why the actual flatness gets checked in person rather than guessed at.
