What is a self-leveling compound?
A self-leveling compound is a cement-based mix poured over a subfloor that flows out on its own to find a flat plane before it sets, closing dips a straightedge would otherwise catch. It does not fix everything by itself. The step before the pour, priming the substrate, is what actually decides whether it bonds and stays flat.
A subfloor that is out of flat by a small amount across a room does not look like a problem standing in the doorway. It becomes one the moment a rigid floor goes down over it, which is exactly the gap a self-leveling compound exists to close before that day arrives. The pour itself is the part everyone pictures. It is not the part that actually decides whether the fix holds.
It starts with what the surface is already doing
Before anything gets mixed, the subfloor gets read: how far out of flat it actually is, whether it is concrete or plywood, and whether moisture is part of the story. Pouring a leveling compound over a slab that is still releasing vapor without addressing that first just buries an active moisture problem under a new, flat, equally doomed surface. What a slab is doing underneath a room and whether a barrier belongs under this floor both get settled before a bag of compound is opened, not after.
Clean is not optional
Dust, oil, old adhesive residue and loose debris all sit between the compound and the surface it needs to grip. A subfloor gets swept, scraped and often vacuumed before priming starts, and anything left behind becomes a weak point exactly where the new floor will eventually put its weight. This step gets skipped in a hurry more often than it should, mostly because a clean floor and a dirty one can look almost the same from a few feet away.
Priming: the step that actually decides the outcome
A primer seals a porous substrate and controls how fast it pulls water out of the compound poured on top of it. Skip that step, or use the wrong primer for the substrate, and the compound can dry unevenly, pinhole, bubble, or fail to bond at all in patches that were never visible until the new flooring is already down and something feels hollow underfoot. Priming is also the step most likely to get rushed, precisely because it looks like nothing is happening. There is no visible flatness improvement, just a coat that has to be given time to do its job before the real pour starts. Protecting that step is what most separates a leveling job that lasts from one that does not.
Setting the target before the pour
A crew sets reference points across the room, using a level or a laser, so the low spots are known in advance rather than judged by eye once the compound is already flowing. That reference is what turns a pour into an actual plane instead of a rough guess at where the material happens to settle.
The pour itself moves fast
Once water hits the powder, working time is short, and a crew mixes and pours continuous batches so the seam between one batch and the next does not show as a ridge once it sets. Self-leveling is a real property of the material, it genuinely spreads itself toward a flat plane, but it still needs help reaching edges and corners where gravity alone will not carry it evenly, and it gets feathered out at the perimeter so it does not leave a hard lip under the flooring that goes on top later. How thick a single pour can go, and exactly how long it stays workable, is printed on the bag and varies by product, which is the label worth reading rather than a general number worth memorizing.
Curing before anything goes on top
Cure time is product-specific and depends on thickness and the conditions in the room, and that timeline is on the same bag the pour depth is. Walking on it before it can carry foot traffic risks marking it permanently. Installing flooring or adhesive on top before it has actually finished curing risks trapping moisture the compound has not finished releasing yet, which defeats the entire point of pouring it in the first place. Getting this last step right is what closes the loop on everything before it.
What it narrows down for the floor going on top
Not every material asks the subfloor for the same flatness. A rigid core plank can bridge a small amount of variation on its own. Tile and thin-set adhesives generally want the tightest plane of anything we install. Carpet is the most forgiving of the group, because the pad absorbs minor variation a hard surface would telegraph straight through. Whether a leveling pour is worth doing at all often comes down to which material is actually going on top of it, which is a conversation worth having before the compound gets ordered rather than after.
