Why does hardwood need to acclimate?
Acclimating means letting the boards come into balance with the air in the room they will live in, not just letting time pass. Wood trades moisture with the air around it until the two stop changing each other. Install before that happens and the floor keeps moving after it is down, which shows up as gaps or cupping.
Wood never stops trading moisture with the air
This is the one piece of wood science the rest of it hangs on. Wood is hygroscopic, which means it takes on water vapor from damp air and gives it up to dry air, and it does that continuously for as long as it exists. It does not seal itself off when it is milled, and a finish on top slows the exchange rather than stopping it. Boards get slightly wider as they take moisture on and slightly narrower as they give it up, almost all of it across the grain rather than along the length.
So a board is always heading toward balance with whatever air is touching it. When it gets there it stops changing dimension. That end state is what acclimated means, and everything below is a consequence of it.
Which matters because of where your boards have been. Flooring is dried in a kiln at the mill down to a moisture content aimed at ordinary indoor living conditions, then bundled, wrapped, trucked, warehoused and delivered, responding quietly to the air in every one of those places along the way. A pallet that sat a week in a humid warehouse in July is not in the same condition as the same product that came off a dry truck in January. None of that is a defect. It is simply why the boards on your driveway are rarely where your house is, and why the distance between the two has to close before anyone starts fastening.
Equilibrium is the target, not a number of days
People ask how many days hardwood needs to sit, and the honest answer is that days are the wrong unit. Two identical pallets can sit the same length of time in two different houses and end up nowhere near each other. What settles it is a moisture meter reading taken on the flooring and compared against a reading on the subfloor it is going over. When those two are close enough for that product, the material is ready. The acceptable spread and any minimum period are printed in the manufacturer's installation instructions for the specific floor you bought, and those instructions govern, not a rule of thumb.
A stack in the garage acclimates to the garage
This is the part that goes wrong most often, and it goes wrong with the best intentions. Material gets delivered and put somewhere out of the way. The garage. An unfinished basement. A covered porch. A room in a house being built where the windows are open and the furnace has never run. In every one of those cases the wood does exactly what it is supposed to do and comes into balance with that space, which is not the space it is going to live in.
- The material belongs inside the actual rooms, with the heating or cooling running the way it normally does. The house has to be at living conditions, not building conditions.
- Wet trades come first. Drywall mud, fresh paint, poured concrete and tile grout all put water into the air, and wood downwind of that will take it on.
- Sealed bundles barely breathe. Only the outside faces of a tight, banded, film wrapped stack meet the room air, so the boards get opened and stacked with air able to reach every face.
- The subfloor is part of the same conversation. It gets a moisture reading too, because material sitting at the right level over a subfloor that is not dry has solved half the problem.
What a floor laid too soon does about it
The floor finishes the process anyway, just underneath your furniture instead of in a stack. Which direction it goes depends on which side of the house's conditions the wood started on.
Installed wetter than the house: the boards give up moisture, narrow, and pull away from each other. That shows as gaps that are wider than the season should produce and that never fully close in a humid August, and on a floor finished in place, as splits in the coating where it was stretched across the seams. Installed drier than the house: the boards take moisture on, grow into each other, and have nowhere to go. Edges press together hard enough to crush, and once crushed that width is gone for good, so the floor opens permanent gaps later when it dries back out. Push it far enough and boards lift off the subfloor entirely. Moisture arriving from underneath rather than from the room gives you the third version, cupped boards with edges standing above their centers, which usually points at what is under the floor rather than at the wood.
Worth separating from all of this: the expansion space left at the walls is not a substitute for acclimating. It exists so a properly conditioned floor can breathe through its normal seasonal cycle. It is not big enough to absorb a floor that was several points off when it went down.
Engineered wood still gets the step
Engineered planks move far less, because the layers in the core are turned across each other and hold the board to size. Less is not none. Engineered flooring carries its own acclimation instruction, some products ask for a short period and some ask for very little, and the answer is on the box rather than in a general rule. The same goes for whether the product suits your rooms at all, which is a Missouri specific question worth settling first.

Nobody can start until the material is in the house, so scheduling follows the delivery rather than leading it, and this waiting period is one of the reasons a wood job runs longer than a carpet job. Yes, that is the whole point. You are matching the wood to the conditions the house holds when people are living in it, so the system has to be running the way it normally runs.
