What is engineered hardwood made of?
Engineered hardwood is built in layers. The top is a wear layer of genuine sawn hardwood. Under it sits a core, either plies of wood stacked with the grain of each one turned across the one above it, or a dense fiberboard. A backing layer balances the plank. Most arrive with a factory cured finish already on.
The parts list, top to bottom
A plank of engineered hardwood is an assembly, and the easiest way to picture it is as four things stacked. On top is the wear layer, a slice of genuine hardwood of a named species, cut from a log the same way a solid board is. Below that is the core, which does the structural work. Below the core is a thin backing layer. Over all of it, on most products, sits a finish that was cured at the factory rather than brushed on in your house. The wear layer is the part you walk on, look at and eventually wear through. It is also the part that decides whether the floor can ever be sanded, which is why its thickness is the specification that matters most. Everything below it exists to hold that wood flat.
Why the plies are turned across each other
Wood moves. It takes on moisture from humid air and gives it up when the furnace runs, and it does nearly all of that movement across the grain rather than along it. A board changes in width. It barely changes in length. That single asymmetry is what an engineered core exploits, and it is also why solid floors open thin gaps in winter.
In a plywood style core, thin plies of wood are stacked with the grain of each one turned roughly ninety degrees to the ply above and below it. When the middle ply tries to swell across its width, the plies either side of it are running lengthwise and will not stretch, so they physically restrain it. Each layer holds its neighbors in check. The plank ends up close to the size it was milled at, through a humid St. Charles County August and a dry, furnace-heated January both.
Plywood core or fiberboard core
Not every engineered plank uses wood plies. Some use a high density fiberboard or a composite core doing the same stabilizing job with a different material. Both are legitimate constructions and both are sold as engineered hardwood.
- Plywood core. Wood plies in alternating directions. It holds fasteners, so it can be stapled or nailed over a wood subfloor as well as glued down or floated.
- Fiberboard or composite core. Dense and very consistent, and common under click-together floating floors. Denser cores tend to feel more solid underfoot and sound quieter.
- Core thickness. It sets the overall plank height, which matters for door clearance and the transition to the next room. It does not tell you how long the floor will last.
The backing layer, and why it is there
Under the core there is usually a thin balancing layer, and it is the least interesting part of the plank and one of the more important. A layered board wants to be symmetrical. Bond a slice of hardwood to one face and leave the other bare and the plank will curl toward the stronger side as indoor humidity shifts through the year. The backing evens the sandwich out so the board lies flat.
The finish is a layer too
Most engineered flooring arrives prefinished, coated with an aluminum oxide finish cured under ultraviolet light on the production line. That is a harder and more even coating than anything that can be applied in an occupied house, and it means no sanding dust, no odor and no cure time before the furniture goes back. The trade is a small bevel milled at each board edge, which reads as a fine line between planks.
What the build changes, and what it does not
The layered construction is why an engineered plank holds a wide face flat and why it can go over a concrete slab or radiant heat, which is the whole reason the category exists. Which construction belongs in which room is settled in full on solid versus engineered. What the layers do not do is make the floor waterproof. The top is still wood, standing water is still a problem, and a room with a water history wants luxury vinyl plank or tile instead.
It is all visible on the end of a sample
None of this can be seen once the floor is down, and all of it can be seen on the cut end of a sample board. The wear layer shows as a distinct band at the top, the plies below it can be counted, and the backing is right there under them. Overall plank thickness tells you about installation method, feel underfoot and door clearance, because a taller board raises the finished floor height and changes every transition and door undercut. Those get checked at the in-home measure. The figure that predicts how long the floor lasts is the wear layer on top, not the total.
