Both are real wood where it counts, on the surface you see and touch. The difference is underneath, and it mostly decides itself once you name the room.
This is the comparison with the most snobbery attached and the least reason for it. Solid and engineered hardwood are not a premium product and its imitation. They are two constructions of the same material, each built for places the other handles badly, and the honest way to choose is to start from where the floor is going rather than from what the names imply. The same wood, built two ways
A solid board is one piece of hardwood, top to bottom. An engineered board is a thick veneer of that same hardwood bonded to a core of layers whose grain alternates direction, each layer restraining the movement of the next. On the surface, where your feet and your eyes live, the two are the same species, the same grain, the same finish options. A well made engineered floor is not pretending to be wood. It is wood, engineered.
The construction difference produces one behavioural difference that drives everything else on this page: solid wood moves with moisture and engineered wood mostly does not. Solid expands and contracts through Missouri's humid summers and heated winters, board by board, forever. The alternating core layers of an engineered board cancel most of that movement out.
Where the location decides for you
Below grade, engineered wins by default because solid is not a candidate: a concrete slab passes moisture upward as vapour year round, and a solid board over that will eventually cup or gap no matter how good the installation was. Engineered over a properly assessed slab is a legitimate, durable choice, and it is the only way to have real wood in a finished basement.
Radiant heat is the same story: the repeated warming and cooling cycles ask for the stability of the layered core. And wide planks tilt engineered too, because the wider a solid board is, the more visible its seasonal movement becomes, while an engineered board holds a wide face flat. If your taste runs to the wide, long boards currently everywhere, engineered delivers that look with fewer seasonal consequences.
Where solid keeps its crown
Above grade, over a wooden subfloor, in standard widths, solid hardwood remains the benchmark for one reason that compounds over decades: sandable thickness. A solid floor can be taken back and refinished repeatedly, which means it can absorb generations of wear and emerge new. It is the only flooring purchase that is plausibly the last one a house ever needs in those rooms.
Solid also holds an edge for matching and repair in older houses, where existing solid floors are common and a new solid floor can be woven in or finished to match in place. And there is an honest intangible: some owners simply want one piece of wood underfoot, and in the rooms where solid is a legitimate choice, that preference costs nothing to honour.
The wear layer: where engineered value lives or dies
Within engineered flooring the single specification that matters most is the thickness of the real wood on top. A generous wear layer can be sanded and refinished much like a solid floor, which buys it decades. A thin one cannot be sanded at all: when it wears through, the floor is done. Both are sold as engineered hardwood, both look identical on installation day, and the difference is invisible from above.
This is why the snobbery version of this comparison misleads people in both directions. A thick-veneer engineered board is a longer-term floor than its reputation, and a thin-veneer one is shorter-term than its category name suggests. Ask to see the edge of the actual board. Five seconds at the counter settles what no product listing will.
The verdict, room by room
- Finished basement or anything on a slab: engineered, because solid is not a candidate there.
- Rooms over radiant heat: engineered, for the same stability reasons.
- Wide plank look anywhere: engineered holds the wide face flat; solid in wide widths will show its seasons.
- Above grade, wooden subfloor, standard widths, long ownership horizon: solid, for maximum sandable life.
- Matching into an older house with existing solid floors: solid, woven or finished to match.
- Occupied house where sanding disruption is unacceptable: engineered, prefinished, walkable when the last board drops.
- Kitchens and full baths: honestly, reconsider wood at all; vinyl plank or tile serve those rooms better.
Cost factors, without numbers
The categories overlap more than people expect, and a thick-veneer engineered floor can sit above a builder-grade solid on a price list. What genuinely moves the quote: species, veneer or board thickness, width, finish, the state of what is underneath, and the installation method the situation demands. Glue-down over a slab and nail-down over wood are different jobs. The useful mindset is that you are buying years of sandable wood and a construction suited to the location, and either category can deliver value or fail to at any price point.

Installation day, compared honestly
The two constructions arrive in your house differently. Solid wood needs to acclimate on site before installation, sitting boxed in the rooms it will live in until its moisture content settles to the house. It is then fastened down, and if it is being finished in place there follows sanding, coating and curing, with the rooms out of use while that happens. The result can be superb, and the process is a real week of your household's life.
Engineered boards, factory finished, skip most of that. Acclimation is shorter, there is no sanding or coating stage, and the floor is walkable when the last board goes down. In an occupied house, or a phased project where one area gets done at a time, that difference is frequently what actually decides the matchup, and it is a legitimate reason to choose engineered even in rooms where solid is a candidate. Disruption is a cost. It just never appears on the quote.
Missouri seasons, and what stable really means
The seasonal argument deserves numbers-free honesty. A well installed solid floor in a house with reasonable humidity control will show small seasonal gaps in winter and close them in summer, and that is normal behaviour, not failure. The point of the engineered core is not that solid wood is broken. It is that some locations amplify wood movement past what is acceptable: slabs, radiant systems, wide planks, rooms with big seasonal swings. In those places the layered core is the difference between character and complaint. In a stable upstairs bedroom, both constructions behave, and the choice can be made on other grounds entirely.
Settling it
Name the rooms first, and let the location verdicts above claim the ones they decide outright.
