Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Some can and some cannot, and the wear layer settles it. Sanding removes wood, and the only wood in an engineered plank is that top layer. A generous wear layer takes a full sand the way a solid floor does, and can take more than one. A thin one will not survive a single pass. The thickness is on the spec sheet, so ask before you buy.
A sanding spends wood you do not get back
Refinishing a wood floor means abrading the surface off it. The machine takes the old finish and a thin slice of wood with it, and what comes out the other side is a slightly thinner floor. On a solid board that is fine, because there is a real reserve of wood above the tongue to spend, and the solid version of this question does that math. On an engineered plank the reserve is one thing only: the layer of genuine sawn hardwood on top. Below it is core, and core is not a surface. It will not sand, will not take a stain, and cannot be lived on.
So the honest answer is never a flat yes or no for the category. Think of the wear layer as a budget. Every sanding draws it down, and when it is spent the floor is finished no matter how sound the rest of the plank is. Two floors sold under the same category name, identical from above on installation day, and one has enough wood up there to be sanded more than once while the other has almost none. More thickness, more sandings. Less thickness, fewer, and past a point, none.
Thickness is not the only thing deciding it
Two floors with the same wear layer will not necessarily take the same number of sandings, because a sanding is not a fixed amount of wood. How deep the machine goes depends on what it is being asked to fix.
- Flatness. Cupped or crowned boards, or a floor laid over a subfloor nobody flattened properly, force a deeper cut. The machine rides the high spots and has to keep going until it reaches the low ones.
- Damage depth. Scuffs and dulling come off in the first pass. A gouge, a scratch that went into the wood, or a dark stain where water sat has to be cut down to, and that comes out of the same budget.
- Bevels. Most engineered planks arrive prefinished with a fine bevel cut into every board edge. Sanding the floor genuinely flat means cutting down past those bevels, which spends more of the layer than the thickness figure alone suggests. The alternative is accepting that old finish stays down in the bevel lines.
- The factory finish. Aluminum oxide cured under ultraviolet light is a hard coating, and breaking through it takes an aggressive first pass before the sander has touched any wood.
Finding out what your floor actually has
Once a floor is down the number is invisible, so this turns into detective work rather than inspection. Work through these in order.
- The spec sheet. Wear layer is listed separately from overall plank thickness, and the overall figure does not answer this question. A product listing that gives only total thickness has told you nothing about the lifespan of the floor.
- A leftover board. If a partial box or a few offcuts went into the garage after the install, the cut end tells you everything, and the layers are easy to read on it.
- The floor itself. Lift the register out of a floor vent, or look under a transition strip at a doorway. The cut edge of a plank is usually exposed at one of those, and you can see it without damaging anything.
- The paperwork. The original invoice or the manufacturer's own product page, if the product name survived, carries the specification.
- If none of that lands, treat the floor as unknown. Sanding to find out how much wood was up there is a test that only runs once.
What sanding through looks like
When a sander reaches the core there is no repair for that spot, only replacement, and it shows itself immediately. The color changes, the grain stops, and you are looking at ply or fiberboard where wood used to be. It is patchy rather than even, because the machine gets there in one area first: at the perimeter where the edger works, in a doorway where the drum sat a moment too long, or along the high side of a floor that was never flat. No stain hides it, because there is nothing left to take the stain.
The options that are not a full sand
A floor that cannot take a sanding is not automatically a floor that has to come out. Most of what people actually want from refinishing is an even, fresh looking surface, and there are lighter ways to get one.
- Screen and recoat. The existing finish is abraded rather than removed and a fresh coat goes over it. Nothing touches the wood, so this works on wear layers that would never survive a sanding. It will not take out a scratch that reached the wood and it will not change the color. Finish compatibility matters, and the manufacturer instructions for the product govern what will bond.
- Spot repair. A single damaged area can often be dealt with on its own. Floors finished with a penetrating oil or hardwax take spot repair far better than a floor sitting under a cured urethane film, where a patched area tends to read as a patch.
- Board replacement. Individual planks can be cut out and swapped. The hard part is not the carpentry, it is the match: a new board has not spent years in that room taking light, and a discontinued product may not be available at all. This is the argument for keeping the leftover boxes.
- Slowing the wear down. Felt pads under everything, a mat where the garage and the driveway come into the house, grit swept up before it gets walked in, rugs in the traffic lanes. The same discipline that keeps a wood floor intact around dogs is what puts this conversation off for years.
Ask for the number before the floor is bought
All of this is easy on the day you are choosing and hard forever after. Wear layer thickness is the one specification worth insisting on, because the whole second half of the floor's life depends on it and none of it can be seen once the boards are down. If you plan to own the house for a long stretch, or you want the option of changing the color later, that number is the decision. If the room is likely to be redone before the floor is worn, sandability may simply not be what you are buying, which is a legitimate call to make with the facts in front of you.

A screen and recoat scuffs up the coating already on the floor and lays a fresh one over the top, without cutting into the wood, so it stays available on floors that could never take a sanding. A full refinish goes to bare wood, which is what lets it remove damage and change color. Only one of the two spends your wear layer.
Changing color means getting back to bare wood, and getting to bare wood means a full sand, which puts you straight back at the wear layer question. The cured factory finish will not take a stain while it is still there. Products that recolor without sanding sit on top of the old finish and behave like a coating rather than a stain, so judge them on that.
Often, yes, and the installation method decides how. A click-together floating floor can sometimes be taken up plank by plank from the nearest wall to reach the board. A glued or nailed plank is cut out in place and a replacement fitted in. The genuine obstacle is matching: an unworn board next to years of light and traffic rarely disappears, and discontinued products may not be available.
