Can hardwood be installed on a concrete slab?

Yes, most often as engineered hardwood. A slab has nothing to nail into and it carries moisture, so solid boards only go over concrete when a wood subfloor is built on top first, which raises the floor. Engineered planks float over an underlayment or glue straight down. Either way the slab gets moisture tested before anything is ordered.

Two separate reasons solid boards stay off concrete

Wood over a slab means engineered hardwood nearly every time, and it helps to know this is not one problem but two, because only one of them can be engineered around.

The first is mechanical. A solid strip floor is fastened with cleats or staples driven at an angle through the tongue into a wood subfloor. Concrete does not take a flooring staple. There is nothing up there to fasten to, so the method that defines a solid installation is unavailable.

The second is moisture. Concrete is porous, it sits on ground that is never dry, and it moves vapor up through itself continuously. A solid board has no core holding it in check, so a steady supply arriving at its underside makes it cup, taking on more at the back than at the face and curling. Slab does not only mean basement

This gets treated as a basement question and most of the time it is not one. Slab on grade is ordinary construction: a ranch built without a crawlspace, a room addition on its own pad, a sunroom, a garage conversion, the structural deck under a condo. All concrete under the finished floor, none of it below grade the way a basement is. An on grade slab has an easier job, and it is still concrete, it still emits, and it still gets tested. Two tests that settle it

This decides everything downstream and it is the part most often skipped. A slab that feels dry to the hand tells you nothing, because the moisture that matters is inside the concrete and only comes out once something covers it. Two tests are recognized by the manufacturers.

  • The anhydrous calcium chloride test, ASTM F1869. A measured dish of salt is sealed under a dome on bare concrete, left for a set period, then weighed again. What it gained gives a moisture vapor emission rate.
  • The in situ relative humidity probe, ASTM F2170. Holes are drilled into the slab, sleeves are set, and the slab is left to reach equilibrium before a probe reads humidity at depth. Most manufacturers specify this one, because it predicts what the slab does once a floor is covering it.
  • The taped down plastic sheet. A square of poly sealed to the slab and checked later for condensation underneath. An indicator rather than a number, so treat a wet one as a reason to run a real test.

What counts as an acceptable result is not ours to decide. Every flooring and adhesive manufacturer publishes its own limits, those limits are what the warranty is written against, and the number therefore comes off their spec sheet rather than a rule of thumb. A freshly poured slab also holds a great deal of water from the mix and has to cure first.

Floated, glued down, or a subfloor built on top

  • Floating. Click together planks over an underlayment, not attached to the slab at all. The quickest route over concrete, the underlayment can carry the vapor retarder, and it forgives an imperfect slab better than adhesive does. It sounds hollower underfoot and needs an expansion gap at every wall and doorway.
  • Glue down. The plank is bonded to the slab with flooring adhesive. Quietest and most solid of the three, and moisture control adhesives handle the bonding and the vapor retarding in one product. It asks the most of the slab.
  • A wood subfloor built over the slab. A vapor retarder goes down, then sleepers or two layers of plywood, and the floor is fastened to that. It is the only route that puts a genuinely solid board over concrete, and it raises the finished floor by the full thickness of the assembly.

Which methods are available is usually settled by the product rather than by preference. Whether the vapor retarder ends up as a sheet, a rolled on membrane or something built into the adhesive is a question of its own.

Where a glue down floor over concrete actually goes wrong

Almost never the adhesive. Adhesive bonds to whatever the top layer of the slab happens to be, and where that is a curing compound, an old sealer, dried paint or the residue of a previous floor, the adhesive holds it beautifully while that layer lets go of the concrete. The fix is preparation, not a stronger glue, so the slab gets ground or shot blasted back to clean concrete.

Flatness is the other one, and it matters more with adhesive than people expect. Glue only transfers where plank and slab genuinely touch. Over a low spot they are not touching, nothing bonds, and months later that is the hollow tick underfoot at one board. High spots get ground and low spots filled, and that preparation belongs in the quote rather than turning up on the day.

Height, doors and the transitions

Every method raises the finished floor by a different amount, which has consequences at the edges of the room. Door bottoms may need undercutting, casings get undercut so the flooring runs beneath them, and the transition to an adjoining floor changes. A subfloor built over a slab changes the most, one more reason that route is a deliberate decision rather than a default.

The rest of the wood story is unchanged by the concrete. The material still acclimates in the house first, and it still lives with a Missouri humidity swing once it is down.
