Standing water is different: it works into the seams between boards, swells the core at the edges first, and can lift or delaminate the plank before the surface itself shows obvious damage.

Where the misunderstanding comes from

Engineered hardwood gets described as moisture tolerant so often, correctly, that the phrase quietly turns into waterproof in people's heads. Engineered hardwood tolerates a level of ambient moisture, a slab pushing vapor upward, a house that runs humid in summer, that would ruin a solid board. None of that is the same claim as being able to sit under standing water and come through unaffected. Tolerant describes a resistance. Waterproof describes a barrier. Engineered has the first, not the second.

What actually happens, plainly

A spill that gets wiped up within the day is close to a non-event on a factory-finished floor. The finish sheds it, and the wood underneath never gets wet at all. Standing water changes the picture entirely, and it does not act on the whole board evenly. Water finds the seam between two planks first, because that is the only place raw wood edge is exposed rather than sealed under finish. It works into that gap and starts swelling the core right there, at the edge, before the center of any board shows a thing. That is why a floor can look completely normal from a few feet away while the seams underneath are already compromised.

The difference between swelling and delaminating

Swelling is the wood itself taking on water and expanding, and in mild, short-lived cases it can settle back down once everything fully dries, though the finish at that seam is rarely the same afterward. Delamination is a different, worse failure: the bond between the wear layer and the core lets go, and the two start separating from each other. Once that happens the board does not recover by drying out. It has to be replaced. How far a board goes down that path depends mostly on how long the water sat and how much of it there was, which is why reacting quickly matters more with this material than almost anything else in the house.

The signs worth catching early

A cupped edge, where the sides of a board sit slightly higher than the center, is usually the first visible sign that a board took on water and is drying unevenly. A soft spot underfoot near a seam, a finish that looks cloudy or milky in one patch, or a slight gap that was not there before are all worth investigating before they spread. None of these mean the whole floor is lost. They mean water reached that spot and the source needs finding before the next board is affected the same way.

What this means for where you put it

This mechanism is exactly why room choice matters more than the marketing copy on any given line. A basement can work for engineered hardwood because the risk there is slow vapor, not standing water, and it is a different risk profile than a kitchen, where a leak can sit unnoticed for a stretch. If you are choosing engineered for a room with any real standing-water risk, that is worth naming out loud before the order goes in rather than after.

If water does get on it

Wipe it up as soon as you find it, and do not wait to see if it dries on its own. If a spill sat long enough that you are worried, check the nearest seams over the following days for cupping or softness rather than assuming the surface looking fine means the seam underneath is fine too.
