How do you handle salt and slush on floors in winter?

The residue test, and what it tells you
Salt and the calcium or magnesium chloride in most ice melt products leave a fine white residue behind as slush dries, and it does not always look like much until it is wiped onto something dark. Wipe a black cloth or a dark sock across the floor a few steps in from the door, after boots have come and gone for a day or two without a fresh mop. A visible white film means the current mopping routine is not fully keeping up, and it is worth knowing that now rather than in March when the whole entry looks dull. A clean cloth means the routine is working, at least on the surface you can see.
The grit test, and what it tells you
Separately, run a fingertip along the floor a stride or two past the doormat, then again a stride or two past that. Grit and sand are the abrasive half of a Missouri winter, tracked in with the slush, and where you find it tells you whether the mat is actually doing its job or just catching the first inch of a much longer track. What a clean test does not tell you
Passing both of those checks is genuinely good news, but it answers a cleaning question, not a material question. A floor can wipe perfectly clean and still be the wrong material for what a Missouri winter does to an entry over several seasons, because residue on the surface and residue working into the material underneath are different problems. Carpet at a door is the clearest example: it can look fine after a wipe down while quietly holding salt and moisture down in the fibers where a cloth test never reaches, which is a large part of why carpet is the wrong fit directly at an entry regardless of how diligent the mopping is.
The test you cannot do with a cloth: slip
Neither test says anything about how the floor performs the moment it is actually wet from melting snow rather than dry after cleanup, which is the condition that matters most for safety. Slip resistance is a property of the surface texture and finish, and it varies by product even within one material category. How that gets measured is its own topic, and it is worth asking about directly for any tile or luxury vinyl plank going into an entry rather than assuming a wet floor behaves the same everywhere.
What to do with the results
A dirty cloth or grit well past the mat is not a sign anything is broken. It is information about your specific household's pattern this winter: how many people and pets come through, how far the mat's coverage actually extends, and how often the floor genuinely needs a pass versus how often it is skipped. Extend the tough material and the mopping habit as far as the grit actually reaches, not just to the edge of the doormat, and repeat the test again after the next real snow to see whether anything changed.
If the results point toward a floor that is working harder than it should, that is a material conversation worth having before next winter rather than during it.

Left to build up in grout lines or against an unsealed or oiled wood finish over a season, chloride residue is more than cosmetic and is part of why wood-family floors are a poor fit directly at an entry.
