What should I do the night before installers arrive?
By the evening before, the room should already be clear under whatever was agreed at scheduling, so tonight is a confirmation pass rather than a plan. Walk the room, clear a path from the nearest entrance to it, decide where the crew parks, set the thermostat to a normal setting, and leave a light on if they arrive before daylight.
The evening before is a confirmation pass, not a planning session
The single biggest reason an install morning gets off to a slow start is a room that looked ready the night before but was not, once someone actually stood in it with a tape measure. What has to be out of the room, and who is handling which piece of it, gets agreed back at scheduling, one of the eight steps in our installation process. It does not get invented the night before. The evening before is when you confirm that plan actually happened rather than draft a new one from scratch.
So walk the room the way the crew will see it in the morning. What actually has to come out of a room, which pieces you are better off handling yourself and which ones are a specialist lift, is settled in full on our page on moving furniture before new carpet, and that page is the list to work from. This one picks up after it, on the evening when the list is supposed to already be done. If something is still standing where it should not be, tonight is the last easy window to move it, before it becomes time on the clock the next day.
Then work outward from the room to the curb
- Clear a path from whichever entrance is closest to the room, and keep it clear. Rolled material and boxed goods are long and heavy and do not turn tight corners.
- Decide tonight where the crew should park, not at the door in the morning. Move vehicles out of the driveway if a truck needs to get close, and mention it when you call if parking is tight, restricted on your street, or shared with a neighbor.
- Deal with the ground between the truck and the door. In winter that means salting the walk and clearing the steps. In a wet spring it means knowing which route across the yard will not turn to mud on the first trip in.
- Set the thermostat to whatever you would normally run it at. The room needs to be at ordinary living temperature rather than shut down for the night, and what that actually means for your material has its own answer.
- If the crew is due before full daylight, leave a light on near the entrance, and make sure any gate, storm door or side access they need is unlocked or that they know how to reach you.
If you will not be the one letting the crew in
Plenty of jobs happen while the homeowner is at work or otherwise away for part of the day. If someone else is handling the morning instead of you, a spouse, a family member, a neighbor holding a key, walk that person through the same list the night before rather than assuming they already know it. Tell them where the crew was told to park, which door to use, and where the thermostat and any relevant switches are.
Two things are worth writing down for whoever opens the door. The first is the alarm, if the house has one: either disarm it for the day or make sure that person can. The second is your own phone number and the showroom's, 636-332-0654, so a question that comes up at the door gets answered in a minute instead of waiting for you to get out of a meeting. A short message the night before, confirming who is opening the house and roughly when the crew is expected, saves everyone a round of phone tag the next morning.
What the evening is not for
You do not need the house immaculate, and the rooms that are not being floored are not the crew's concern. What matters is the specific room, the path to it, and the way in from the street. Anything beyond that is tidying for your own benefit, and the night before an install is a poor time to take on more of it than you have to.
It is also not the evening to open new questions. If you are unsure whether something in the room is the crew's problem or yours, that belongs at scheduling or at the measure, while somebody is standing in the room and can see it. What the crew actually asks once they arrive is a shorter, more practical list than most people expect, but every item on it works from the assumption that the room itself is ready to go.
The step that actually decides the morning
Of everything here, one item decides more than the rest combined: whether the room is genuinely empty of what was agreed, rather than merely straightened up. Anything still sitting on the floor when the crew walks in has to be dealt with while they wait, and that time comes out of install progress rather than getting added back at the end of the day. The thermostat, the porch light and the driveway are convenience. The empty room is the one thing worth double-checking before you turn in, and if it is not going to happen, the useful move is a phone call tonight rather than an explanation in the driveway tomorrow.
What else people ask the night before install day
The driveway and the walk, the water supply, and what to do if the room is not fully clear yet.
636-332-0654Yes, more than people expect. The crew has to get long, heavy material from a truck to your door, so the driveway, the walk and the steps all matter. Salt and clear them in winter. If parking is tight, shared with a neighbor or restricted on your street, say so when you call rather than letting the crew find out standing at the curb.
Only if the crew or the measure specifically asked you to, usually because a laundry room or a bathroom fixture is being disconnected as part of the job. For a normal room being floored, the water supply to the rest of the house is not something you need to touch.
Call the showroom at 636-332-0654 and say so. It is far better to flag it the evening before than to have the crew discover it standing in the driveway the next morning, and it may change nothing more than the order the crew works in that day.
Confirm what your specific material needs first
Hardwood, tile and carpet each ask something slightly different of the room the night before, from how the thermostat should sit to whether the crew needs water access. Tell us what you are installing when you book, and we will tell you exactly what tonight's checklist looks like for it.
