How long does engineered hardwood last?
There's no fixed number of years, because the answer runs through the wear layer rather than the calendar. An engineered floor is retired by how much real wood sits on top and how hard the room works it, not by a date. What it reliably gives you is decades of wood in rooms where solid was never a candidate at all.
What you gain: lifespan in rooms that would otherwise have none
Below grade, over a slab, or over radiant heat, solid hardwood is not really a competitor, a point our basement page settles from the moisture side. So any number of years engineered logs in one of those rooms is not being measured against how long solid would have lasted there. It is being measured against zero, because solid was never a real option for that room to begin with. That reframes the whole question. In those specific rooms, engineered's lifespan is close to a pure gain, not a compromise against something better.
What you give up: a ceiling set the day you buy, not the day it wears out
Every engineered floor has a wear layer, the real wood on top, and its thickness sets a hard ceiling on how many times the floor can ever be sanded. The bands run from a layer with nothing there to sand at all up to a sawn face that behaves close to solid, and which band a given board falls into is a question with its own page. The point for this page is narrower: the ceiling on how long a floor can go on being restored is chosen at the counter, off a spec sheet, rather than discovered years later.
Where each side actually wins
Below grade, on a slab, over radiant heat, or in a wide-plank room, engineered wins by default, because the alternative is not a longer-lasting solid floor, it is no solid floor at all. Above grade, over a wooden subfloor, with a genuinely long ownership horizon and a preference for maximum total sandable life, solid keeps its edge on the ceiling. And in a room that sees light, occasional use for years, a guest room, a formal space nobody walks through daily, a modest wear layer on engineered is plenty, because a lightly used room will likely never call on refinish capacity it was given.
The honest downside of both
Solid's downside is real and ongoing: without reasonably steady indoor humidity, it moves, and that movement is a permanent feature of the material rather than a one-time risk. What matters for the lifespan question is narrower: the ceiling is a decision taken on a day when the cut edge of a board is still in front of you, and checking that number yourself has its own page. Care stretches the number either way, it does not reset it
Holding indoor humidity somewhere near 35 to 55 percent through both Missouri seasons is genuinely part of the lifespan story, and it helps both constructions get more out of what they were built with. It slows the seasonal movement solid wood is prone to, and it protects the finish and the wear layer underneath it on engineered from drying out or taking on more stress than the core was designed to absorb. What good care cannot do is add real wood back to a wear layer that has already been sanded down to its limit, or turn a thin construction into a thick one after the fact. Care extends what you bought. It does not change what you bought.

636-332-0654Because the honest answer depends on the wear layer chosen, how the room gets used, and how the floor is cared for, not on the category name alone. A thin wear layer in a busy kitchen and a generous one in a rarely used guest room are not on the same timeline, even sold under the same product name.
It depends entirely on the wear layer you choose against the sandable thickness of the solid alternative. A generous wear layer can come close to solid's refinishing life; a thin one cannot. Above grade, where both are genuine candidates, that comparison is worth having at the counter with actual boards in hand.
Once the wear layer is sanded through, there is no more real wood left on top to sand again, regardless of how the rest of the floor is holding up. At that point the floor gets replaced rather than refinished, which is the tradeoff a thinner wear layer accepts by design. Screening and recoating, which abrades the finish without touching the wood, is a separate option worth asking about before that point is reached.
It changes where the floor can survive more than how many years it logs. A plywood core and a dense composite core are both engineered hardwood, and both hold a wear layer above them. What the core decides is whether the board suits a slab, a radiant system or a room with big humidity swings, and a board put somewhere its core was not built for will not reach the ceiling its wear layer set.
