The name is where the confusion starts

Self-leveling compound sounds like it should make a floor level, the way a bubble level would judge it, and that belief is reasonable given the name on the bag. It is also not quite what the material does. What manufacturers care about when a floor goes down is flatness: whether the surface has dips, ridges or high spots over a given stretch of subfloor, measured with a straightedge rather than a bubble. A subfloor can be perfectly flat by that measure and still slope gently from one wall to the other, the way an old house settles or a slab was poured slightly out of true on purpose for drainage somewhere. Flat and level are answering two different questions, and a bag labeled self-leveling is answering the first one.

What it actually corrects

Poured over a subfloor, the compound genuinely does flow toward its own flat plane on its own, which is the real property the name is describing. That closes dips, low spots and minor unevenness that a straightedge would catch and a rigid flooring material would otherwise bridge poorly, leaving a hollow spot or a seam that flexes underfoot. Correcting an actual structural slope is a different kind of work entirely, involving the framing or the slab itself rather than a topping poured over it, and it gets identified at the subfloor check, not assumed away by a bag of powder.

Why the belief persists anyway

Most rooms with a real slope also have local dips and ridges layered on top of it, and pouring compound over the whole area fixes the visible symptom, the unevenness you can feel walking across the room, while leaving the underlying tilt untouched. The floor feels dramatically better afterward, which is exactly the experience the name promised, so the confusion between flat and level rarely gets corrected by the result. It only shows up later, in a room where the slope was pronounced enough that the new floor still visibly runs downhill even though every inch of it, measured with a straightedge, is genuinely flat.

Different materials tolerate the remaining slope differently even once local flatness is solved. A rigid-core plank can bridge minor variation and generally will not care about a gentle overall pitch the way it would care about an abrupt dip. Tile and its thinset want the tightest, truest plane of anything installed, which is exactly why a subfloor destined for tile gets the closest look before a pour rather than after. That distinction, and what a given material actually asks for, is worth raising when the room gets assessed rather than guessed at from a spec sheet.

It gets identified and repaired at the framing level first, and only then does a leveling pour make sense if the surface still needs it.

A straightedge or a long level laid across the room is the honest way to tell. A dip that a short straightedge finds but a long one laid across the whole room does not is local unevenness. A gap that grows the farther the straightedge travels is a slope, and it is worth having someone measure it in person rather than guessing from a feeling underfoot.
