What is a moisture test and when is it needed?
A way of checking whether a concrete slab or subfloor is moving water vapor upward before flooring goes over it. A simple version tapes a clear plastic sheet to the surface and watches for condensation or darkening underneath. Worth running on any slab, any below-grade room, or any subfloor with a past leak, especially before a wood-family floor. It shows whether moisture is present, not how much.
A simple version you can run yourself
Before any professional test happens, there is a basic version anyone can run on a concrete slab or subfloor they are curious about. Tape a square of clear plastic sheeting to the surface, sealing all four edges so no room air can get underneath it, and leave it undisturbed for a full day. What you are watching for is condensation beading on the underside of the plastic, or a patch of concrete underneath it turning visibly darker than the surrounding area. Either one means water vapor is moving up through that surface and collecting where it hit the plastic instead of evaporating into the room.
This costs almost nothing and takes a few minutes to set up, which is exactly why it is worth doing before you get attached to a specific floor for that room. It will not catch a subtle or slow-moving amount of vapor as reliably as a real instrument would, but a clear positive result, visible fogging or a dark ring under the plastic, is a strong enough signal on its own to change the conversation.
What a positive result actually tells you
It tells you that moisture is present and moving, which is the qualitative fact that matters most for a first decision. A slab that fogs a plastic sheet overnight is a slab that will treat an organic-core wood floor the same way over months and years instead of one night, which is the mechanism behind why a below-grade slab is doing something even when it looks and feels dry. Seeing it happen under a sheet of plastic in an afternoon makes that abstract fact concrete, literally, in a way a dry-looking floor never will on its own.
Where the test stops telling you anything
It does not give you a number. A plastic-sheet check answers yes or no, not how much vapor is moving or whether a specific product's moisture tolerance is being exceeded. Manufacturers who require a moisture reading before installing certain products, particularly some adhesives and some hardwood, specify an actual instrument test, typically a calcium chloride kit or an in-situ relative humidity probe, run to the standard printed in their own installation instructions. That test produces a real figure the installer can compare against the product's stated limit. The plastic sheet is a screening tool that tells you whether that conversation needs to happen at all, not a substitute for it.
It also does not tell you which material is the right call for the room. A positive result is information a recommendation gets built around, not a verdict by itself. Plenty of rooms with real moisture in the slab still get a beautiful floor, just a different one than a dry room would get.
When it is worth running
Any room with a concrete slab under it is a reasonable candidate, since slabs give up moisture for years regardless of age or how dry they look. Below-grade rooms carry that concern by default. So does any subfloor, slab or plywood, with a documented history: a leak, a flood, a spot that has always felt cool or damp underfoot. It is worth running ahead of any wood-family floor specifically, solid or engineered hardwood, laminate with a fiberboard core, since those are the materials most affected by sustained moisture, more than it matters ahead of a material like tile or luxury vinyl that genuinely does not care.
Where the professional version fits in
Whatever a homemade plastic-sheet test shows, the free in-home measure is where the subfloor actually gets looked at, wood or concrete, for how flat it is, how dry it is and how sound it feels underfoot, and it feeds straight into the preparation step before anything is ordered. It is also where a moisture history or a positive sheet test gets flagged, and where an instrument test gets called for if the product you end up choosing asks for one in its own installation instructions. Mention any moisture history you know about even if the sheet came back clean, because a single afternoon of plastic taped to concrete is a screening step, not the final word on a room you are about to floor for years.

A slab can be dry to the touch, never have held standing water, and still be releasing moisture continuously, which is exactly what a plastic-sheet check is built to catch.
You still get useful information from it, but a material that is genuinely unaffected by slab vapor lowers the stakes considerably. It matters most, and is worth running without exception, ahead of any wood-family or fiberboard-core product.
