Who will I work with at the showroom?

Jonah and Audra Paup own Flooring Correct and work in it, and the owners help people choose at the counter. Installation is handled by the store's own crews, which is a separate group from the counter. Ask for someone by name when you call, and bring a question the product box cannot answer.

You can learn more about a flooring store in the first few minutes at the rack than in an hour of reading about it, and the test costs you nothing but the question.

A test you can run standing at the rack

Pick up any sample and ask something that cannot be answered from the box. Not what is this made of, which is printed on the back of the board, but something that only has an answer if you know how the product goes down inside a house. Four that work anywhere:

  • What goes under this one, and does that change if I am on concrete?
  • How would this meet the tile in my hall, and what would that transition actually look like?
  • In a room this shape, where would the seam end up?
  • What does this need my subfloor to be doing before it goes down?

What the answer tells you

Watch which direction it travels. An answer that comes back as a feature list is a catalog answer, and a catalog is something you already have on your phone. An answer that comes back as a question about your house, how old is it, is there concrete under that room, what is the doorway meeting, is somebody thinking about the installation rather than the sale. That is the whole test, and it takes about a minute.

It matters because the recommendation you get later is only ever as good as the questions asked before it. Our eight steps put the consultation ahead of product selection for exactly that reason: nothing gets recommended until somebody knows what the floor has to survive.

What the test does not tell you

Three things, and it is worth being clear about all three.

  • It does not tell you a number. Nobody here quotes a room they have not seen, and the cost page explains why that is deliberate rather than evasive.
  • It does not tell you your subfloor is sound. That is what the free in-home measure is for, and it is the step where a recommendation can still change.
  • It does not tell you who will be in your house on install day. The counter and the crews are different people, and they matter for different reasons.

Who is actually behind this counter

Jonah Paup owns Flooring Correct and runs it with his wife Audra, and both are described as owners on our own pages. Jonah trained for more than 25 years under his father Bobby, and store management came from his uncle David. The family runs back to the Paup Boys in the early 70s, and the family ownership question has a page to itself. Our about page names the rest of the team and invites you to ask for any of them by name, which is worth doing if you started the conversation with somebody on a previous visit.

The install itself is handled by the store's own installation crews, which is a different group of people from the counter. Their experience is the store's own claim about its own people: every crew past 15 years in the trade, most installers past 25. It is also why one phone number covers choosing the floor and asking about it a year later.

What the floor can show you that a screen cannot

The test above is about people. The rack itself is a separate advantage and a purely physical one: a full plank instead of a sample chip, a tile at real scale, carpet you can press a thumb into and watch recover or fail to. That case is argued in full elsewhere. Run both tests on the same trip, and bring the pieces you cannot change with you, because the first visit has an order to it.

One more thing worth knowing about the counter: whoever you end up with, the conversation is the same shape. Rooms first, then what is underneath them, then who walks on them, and only after that a color. If you get pushed straight to a rack without any of that, ask the questions at the top of this page and see what comes back. It is a fair thing to do in any store, ours included.

The Wentzville showroom is open Monday through Saturday and nothing about looking commits you. Call 636-332-0654 if you want to be sure a particular person is free when you arrive, and bring the questions above with you.

The people

Questions about who you deal with

Asking for someone by name, who is in the house on install day, and what owner-run changes.

636-332-0654

Yes, and it is worth calling ahead if you do. No appointment is needed to look around, but the person you spoke to last time will not necessarily be free the moment you walk in. A call to 636-332-0654 before you set off is the difference between picking up where you left off and starting the whole conversation over again.

The counter and the crews are different people, so the person who pulled your samples is not necessarily one of the people laying the floor. What matters is that both sit under one roof. A question about the install goes back to the people who sold you the floor, on the number you have already been calling, rather than to a company you have never spoken to.

It changes what an answer is able to commit to. Someone who owns the store can rule a product out for your room without checking with anybody, and can say plainly that a material is a poor fit rather than steering you toward whatever is easiest to sell. It also means the same person is there when you come back in a year.
