How thick should an engineered wear layer be?
That depends on how the room gets used, and the way to know what you're actually looking at is to check it yourself rather than trust a marketing name. Look at the cut edge of an actual board, ask for the millimeter number on the spec sheet, and match it to the room: light use wants less, heavy traffic and a future refinish want more.
What you can actually check yourself
You do not have to take a collection name's word for what it is built with. Ask to see a cut sample or the end of a plank on display, and the wear layer shows itself directly: a solid band of real wood sitting on top, with a visibly different, layered material underneath it where the core takes over. That boundary line is not hidden. It is the one place on the whole board where the construction actually shows itself to the eye. Faster still, ask for the millimeter figure printed on the spec sheet or the box. It is a stated number, not something you have to estimate by eye at all.
What the number actually tells you
The wear layer number answers two real questions, and only two. First, whether the floor can ever be sanded again. Our engineered hardwood page lays the bands out in full: under 1 mm, there is nothing there to sand, so the floor gets replaced rather than refinished. Around 2 mm supports one careful refinish. At 3 mm and up, two or more are realistic. From 4 to 6 mm, sawn-face construction behaves close to solid wood and is built for decades. What a sanding actually spends out of that layer, and what a floor still has left once it cannot take another pass, is settled on our refinishing answer rather than repeated here. Second, the number gives a rough sense of how much real wood is standing between the surface and the core in a room that takes hard, repeated grit, which is exactly what the mechanism behind everyday scratching comes down to underneath the finish.
What the number does not tell you
A generous wear layer says nothing about the core underneath it. A thick top layer can still sit on a core that is a poor match for a slab or radiant heat if the construction underneath is not separately checked for that job, which is exactly why the concrete question and the radiant heat question each get their own answer rather than folding into this one. The wear layer number also says nothing about finish quality or how even the factory coating looks on day one, and nothing about species or color, because two boards with the identical wear layer figure can be entirely different woods with entirely different looks.
One number people mix up with it
Wear layer thickness and overall plank thickness are printed on the same spec sheet and answer two different questions. Our engineered hardwood page separates the two directly, and it is worth repeating here because the mix-up is common: overall plank thickness is about installation method and how the floor feels underfoot, plus how efficiently a floor moves heat when it sits over a radiant system, not about how many times it can be refinished. A thicker plank overall does not automatically mean a thicker wear layer sits inside it. The two numbers move somewhat independently, which is exactly why asking for the wear layer figure specifically, rather than assuming a heavier-feeling board has more real wood on top, is the question worth asking by name.
Two questions to ask before you narrow a line
Bring the room's actual traffic level in your head before you get to the samples, a lightly used guest room reads very differently from a hallway that sees daily foot and paw traffic. Then ask two direct questions about any line you are drawn to: what is the wear layer number, and is this construction prefinished or built for site finishing. Hold it next to a second or third sample rather than judging one board in isolation, because engineered hardwood as a category name tells you nothing on its own about what is actually inside a given board. The specific board and its printed spec sheet are what actually need checking, not an assumption based on a collection name or how a floor sample looks propped against the wall.

Not directly. Day to day scratch resistance comes mostly from the finish coat sitting on top of the wear layer, not from how much wood is underneath it. Wear layer thickness is really about how many times the floor can be sanded down the road, which is a separate question from how well it resists the first scratch.
