That timing decides almost everything about a carpet job here. A builder-grade pad is specified once, by somebody who will never live on it, and in a Eureka house of this vintage it has been compressed under daily traffic since the family moved in. Why cushion decides how a floor wears belongs to that same pillar and is not re-argued here. What is local is the timing. The pad and the carpet above it went in on the same day and reached the end of their service together, so in a first replacement the pad is not a separate decision so much as the other half of the same one, and the answer comes from lifting a corner rather than from a rule.

Where a Eureka two-story plan goes flat first

Carpet in these houses does not wear evenly, it wears along a route: in from the garage door, the pivot at the foot of the stairs, the treads themselves, and the upstairs hall outside the bedroom doors. A bedroom can look sound while its own doorway has been polished flat. The common shape of a Eureka project is not a whole-house recarpet. What the free measure turns up under Eureka carpet

Original tack strip still holding, staples that pull clean, and a deck that has spent its entire life dry beneath a covering. That is the ordinary finding here and it is a good one. So we spend the visit on the smaller things a young house still produces: a squeak over a joist that is far easier to solve while the floor is open, a seam plan for a long family room so the join misses the light from the back windows, and whether the stairs were originally carpeted over finished treads or rough ones, which decides how the new run is fitted.
