Glue-Down Or Floating,
And Who Actually
Gets To Decide
One floor is bonded to what is under it. The other is a raft of locked planks resting on top with a gap hidden behind the trim. That single difference sets how quiet the room is, how long the job takes, what happens the day a board gets ruined, and how much preparation the floor underneath needs first.

Neither one tells you which to choose, because that answer is not a property of the flooring. It is a property of your building, your timeline and what you intend to do with the room in ten years. Half the time the method has already been chosen for you
Before anyone gets a preference, three things vote. The product votes first: many lines are approved for one method only, and installing outside the written instructions is how a warranty ends. The subfloor votes second, because a wood subfloor over a crawl space opens up options that a slab closes, and a slab that fails a moisture test closes options of its own. The assembly votes third: in-floor radiant heat rules out fasteners entirely, which leaves exactly two candidates.
So the first useful question is not which method you like. It is whether you have a choice at all in this room. Plenty of houses have a real choice on the main level and none in the basement, and knowing that before you shop saves an afternoon of samples that were never going to work down there.
Floating buys speed and reversibility, and it charges you at the perimeter
A floating floor goes down fast, needs no adhesive cure, and lets a room be furnished the same day it is finished. It tolerates a subfloor that is good rather than perfect, and if the house sells or the room changes purpose, it comes back up without destroying what is underneath. In a basement over a slab that breathes, it is usually the sensible answer rather than a compromise.
The charge comes at the edges. A floating floor has to stay free to move, so the expansion gap at every wall, post, pipe and door jamb has to be real and has to stay clear. Pinch it anywhere and the floor has nowhere to go: a cabinet run set on top of it, a heavy island landing across the seam, base trim nailed through instead of into the wall. That is what buckling is, almost every time. It is also the floor you can hear, a faint hollow report under a hard shoe that some people never notice and others cannot stop hearing.
Glue-down buys silence and permanence, and it charges you before install day
Bonded flooring is the most solid thing you can walk on. No hollow sound, no movement under a heavy step, no raft shifting under a piano, no perimeter to protect. It handles a long unbroken run without asking for a transition in the middle, and it puts a wood surface in contact with a radiant slab in the way that actually moves heat into the room.
You pay for that in preparation and in time. The substrate has to be genuinely flat within the manufacturer tolerance, which means grinding humps and filling hollows rather than hoping the plank spans them. Concrete gets tested for moisture and the adhesive is chosen from the result, not from habit. Then the floor has to be left alone while the bond develops. And the honest part people skip: taking a glued floor back up later is real demolition, and the surface underneath rarely comes through it clean.
Long open runs are where the two methods stop agreeing
An open plan is one continuous field of floor from the entry through the kitchen to the back wall, and floating products carry a maximum run before the manufacturer wants a break. That is why some floors end up with a transition strip in a doorway nobody wanted one in. Bonded flooring has no such limit, so a great room that reads as one surface with no metal in the openings is a glue-down conversation.
The same argument runs the other way in a chopped up house. A hallway with five doorways off it, a bedroom wing, a bonus room over a garage: those rooms sit inside the run limits comfortably, and the speed of a floating install is pure upside. Look at the shape of the plan before the flooring, because the plan decides whether the limit applies to you at all.
The fridge, the leak and the day one board gets ruined
Ask how each floor behaves under repair, because that is the difference you live with. On a floating floor a single damaged plank is the easy case: it comes out and a new one goes in without touching the rest of the room, provided the same run is still available. The catch is location, since a plank in the middle of a large field is reached by unlocking back to the nearest wall or by cutting it out. On a glued floor there is no unlocking at all. The board is cut out and a new one bonded in, tidy in the middle and fussy at a seam.
Water is the other test. A supply line letting go behind a dishwasher can run under a floating floor and sit there, and even a waterproof plank does not make the trapped water disappear, so the floor has to come up to dry. A bonded floor gives water fewer places to travel, but where the adhesive gets wet, the bond is what fails. Neither method is a plumbing plan. Both want the leak fixed and the room dried before anything gets relaid.
Radiant heat cuts the list to two, then usually to one
Over in-floor heat, nails and staples are out, which leaves floating and full glue-down. From there the tiebreaker is heat transfer. A bonded floor sits in direct contact with the heated slab and passes warmth up efficiently. A floating floor over an underlayment puts a small insulating layer in the path, which is not fatal but does mean the system works a little harder to reach the same room temperature.
Either way, the rules that come with radiant heat are not optional: the surface temperature stays under the maximum in the manufacturer instructions, and the system comes up gradually before installation and again at the start of the season. Those rules belong to the assembly, not to the method.
The third method that settles a lot of arguments
Over a sound wood subfloor on the main level, the answer is frequently neither. Engineered planks staple or nail down the same way a solid floor does, which gives you the solidity of a bonded floor without the adhesive, the cure time or the demolition later. If your house has a wood subfloor and you are agonizing over glue versus click, the useful question is whether the product you like can simply be fastened instead.
There is a second case where neither belongs. If a joist bay flexes underfoot, if a subfloor panel has gone soft near a bath, or if a slab reads wet, no method compensates. Bonding to a moving or damp substrate transfers the problem to the adhesive, and floating over it produces a floor that flexes and eventually clicks apart at the seams. Repair comes first and the method decision comes second.
Where we land, by room and by household
- Basement over a slab, with a moisture reading in range: floating, for the tolerance and for the fact that it can come back up if the room floods once.
- One continuous main level with no doorways to hide a transition in: glue-down, so the field runs wall to wall without a strip in the opening.
- Kitchen where cabinets and a heavy island are already set: glue-down, because a floating floor pinned under cabinetry has lost the gap it needs.
- Second floor bedrooms over living space: floating with the permitted underlayment, which is the quieter assembly for the room underneath.
- A rental or a room whose purpose is likely to change: floating, and keep a few spare planks from the same run in the utility room.
- Engineered wood over in-floor heat: glue-down if the product allows it, because contact with the slab is what makes the system efficient.
What the visit settles before anyone talks adhesive
The argument resolves quickly with three facts in hand: what the subfloor actually is, how flat it reads across the room, and what the concrete says on a moisture test. Add the doorways and where you would accept a transition, and the choice makes itself. Book the in-home measure for those, and use the comparison index for the material questions beside this one. The questions that come up once the material is settled
People pick a floor first and then discover the method changes the job. These are the questions that follow.
636-332-0654Sometimes, and it depends on what the old floor is bonded to and how well. A cushioned or loose laid sheet floor is not a bonding surface, and a floor with a failing bond underneath takes the new one down with it. Where the existing floor is sound, flat and well adhered, some products allow it and the manufacturer instructions say so in writing.
It reports a little more than a bonded floor does, especially in a large room with hard walls and no rugs. Some people never register it. If you are the kind of person who notices, walk on both at the showroom before choosing, because it is the one difference a spec sheet cannot describe to you.
You can, and it is demolition rather than removal. Expect adhesive residue on the concrete and scraping or grinding to get back to a bondable surface. If reversibility matters, because the room might become something else or the house might sell soon, that argues for a floating install from the start.
Floating products carry a maximum uninterrupted run in the manufacturer instructions, and past it the floor needs a break so it can move. Installing beyond the limit is what produces a peaked seam in year two. If a strip free opening matters more than anything, that is a reason to look at a bonded floor instead.
For the person in the room below, a floating floor over a permitted underlayment usually transmits less footfall than the same plank bonded solidly to the framing. It is a modest difference and it is not soundproofing. What is under the ceiling below matters at least as much as the floor above it.
It follows the adhesive, not the calendar, and the container states the working and cure times. Stay off the floor for the period the manufacturer names, and keep heavy pieces off longer than foot traffic. Rushing furniture onto a bond that has not developed is the shortcut that shows up later.
