Wood moves, and Missouri makes it move

Solid hardwood takes on and gives off moisture with the air around it. It swells slightly in a humid summer and shrinks slightly in a dry heated winter, and it does that every year for as long as the floor exists. This is normal, it is not a defect, and every good hardwood installation is designed with it in mind. Expansion space at the walls, the right fasteners, boards laid at a moisture content that suits the house they are going into.

It is also why wood needs to acclimate before it goes down. Delivering flooring and installing it the same afternoon is how you get gaps in February or a cupped floor in July. The boards sit in the house until they have settled to the conditions they will live in. That waiting is part of the job, and any schedule that does not include it is quietly borrowing against your floor.

Choosing a species by how you live

Red oak is the American standard for good reasons: it is hard enough for family use, its grain is busy enough to disguise ordinary life, and it takes stain predictably. White oak has a tighter, straighter figure and has become the designer default. Maple is cleaner and more contemporary in appearance and shows dents more readily than its hardness suggests. Hickory is the hardest working domestic species and has dramatic color variation you either love or do not. Walnut is beautiful and softer than people expect.

Hardness is worth understanding without letting it decide everything for you. A harder species resists denting better, but finish quality, plank width, board color and how much grain activity there is all affect how a floor looks after five years of a real household. A busy grain in a mid tone hides daily life better than a hard, pale, quiet floor does.

Where solid wood should not go

We would rather tell you this before you buy than after. Solid hardwood does not belong below grade. A basement slab passes moisture upward as vapor even when the room has never had water in it and the floor feels dry, and wood responds to that over time. Full baths and laundry rooms are the same conversation for different reasons. If you want a wood look in those rooms, luxury vinyl plank is the honest answer and tile is the durable one.

If you want real wood over a slab or across a radiant heated area, the answer is usually engineered hardwood rather than solid. That is not a downgrade. It is a different construction built for exactly that situation, and recommending it where it fits is part of getting the floor right the first time.

Prefinished or finished in place

Prefinished boards arrive with their finish already cured in a factory, which means a harder wearing surface and a house that is usable much sooner. Finished in place means sanding and coating after installation, which gives a continuous surface with no bevel between boards and lets the color be matched to something existing. Each suits different circumstances, and which one suits yours depends on the rooms, the schedule and whether you are matching to wood that is staying.
