The seamless argument
Every other flooring material arrives in pieces and gets assembled in your room. Planks have edges. Tiles have grout lines. Carpet has seams where the roll runs out. All of those junctions are managed well by a good installation, but they exist, and water finds junctions given long enough.
Sheet vinyl arrives in wide rolls, which means a bathroom, a powder room, a laundry room and many kitchens can be covered in one continuous piece with no seam anywhere in the room. That is not a marginal difference in a wet room. It is the most watertight floor you can install, and no plank format can match it however good the locking system is.
Where it genuinely wins
Laundry rooms are the clearest case. They are small enough to go seamless, they contain an appliance that holds a great deal of water, and that appliance can fail without anybody being in the room. A continuous floor with the material carried up slightly at the edges is a very sensible thing to have under a washing machine.
Bathrooms are the same argument. A powder room is almost always a single piece. A small full bathroom usually is too. It is not the vinyl your grandmother had
The reputational problem this category carries comes from a product that has not been current for a long time. Sheet vinyl of that era was thin, printed unconvincingly, and showed every imperfection in the floor beneath it. Modern sheet goods are considerably thicker, are built in layers with a proper wear surface on top, and are printed and textured well enough that a good one reads as tile or wood from standing height.
Some are cushioned, which makes them notably comfortable underfoot and quieter than a rigid surface. That matters in a laundry room or a kitchen where somebody stands for a while, and it is the sort of thing you only discover by walking on it, which is what the showroom floor is for.

The subfloor shows through, and that is the trade-off
This is the honest limitation and it is the reverse of the seamless advantage. Because sheet vinyl is relatively thin and flexible, it follows the surface underneath it rather than bridging it. A rigid core plank will hide a small imperfection. Sheet vinyl will telegraph it, and over time a bump or a joint underneath can begin to show as a line on the surface.
The answer is preparation. The floor underneath has to be made smooth first, which sometimes means an underlayment sheet or a levelling compound, and that goes into the quote as a line item rather than appearing later. It is the main reason a sheet vinyl job should never be priced without somebody looking at the room. When we would point you elsewhere
In a large open main level, sheet vinyl loses its advantage, because the room is wider than the roll and you end up with a seam anyway. There luxury vinyl plank is usually the better answer. If the room is a full bathroom where you want maximum longevity and do not mind the cold, tile outlasts everything. In bedrooms, carpet is the comfort answer.
Sheet vinyl's territory is small and mid sized rooms where water is the priority and a continuous surface is achievable.
