The two things it does that carpet cannot

Laid low, and laid over what is there

Carpet tile is usually fitted with a releasable adhesive rather than being permanently bonded, which is what allows a square to be lifted later without disturbing its neighbours. A great many products carry their cushioning on the tile back, so a separate pad is often unnecessary. That keeps the finished floor low, which matters in a basement where headroom is finite and at a doorway where a thicker floor would need the door trimmed.

In an occupied house that low profile is a quiet advantage. It reduces the transition problems that come with retrofitting any floor into a finished room, and it makes a single-room project genuinely self contained rather than something that ripples into the rooms next door.

How it actually looks now

The old objection was that carpet tile reads as an office floor, and there was a time when that was true. The current products come in textures, patterns and pile styles that are a long way from a flat grey square, and how they are laid changes the result: uniform orientation reads as one continuous carpet, while alternating the direction of each square produces a subtle grid you notice only when you look for it.

That is impossible to judge from a single square in the hand and easy to judge from a group laid out on the floor. It is worth the fifteen minute drive to look at properly, because most people change their mind about this category once they see it as a field rather than as a sample.

Bedrooms are usually nicer in broadloom carpet, which can be softer and offers a wider choice, and where repairability is not a pressing concern. Stairs should be broadloom wrapped over the nosing rather than tiled. If the lower level has a moisture story that concerns us, luxury vinyl plank may be the safer recommendation and we will say so.
