Fiber decides almost everything

The honest summary is that fiber should be chosen by room and by household, not by the swatch you liked first.

The pad is not an upsell

The single most common regret we hear about carpet is not about the carpet. It is about what went underneath it. Pad carries the load. It absorbs the compression that would otherwise crush the fiber, it changes how the floor feels underfoot, and it does a great deal of the work of making an upstairs room quieter. Good carpet on inadequate pad wears out early and feels cheaper than it is.

Density matters more than thickness, which is counterintuitive, and thicker is not automatically better. Too much give under a loop construction can actually work against the carpet. This is a thirty second conversation at the counter with samples in front of you and an impossible one to have from a product page, which is a fair summary of why carpet is bought in showrooms.

Construction, and what a traffic lane does

Cut pile is the familiar plush surface. Loop constructions wear differently and hide footprints better. Cut and loop combines the two into pattern. Frieze twists the fiber hard enough that it disguises tracks and vacuum lines, which is why it keeps turning up in family rooms. Face weight tells you how much fiber is actually there per square yard, and comparing face weight between two carpets in the same construction is one of the few genuinely useful numeric comparisons in the category.

Stairs deserve their own decision

In a two story house the stairs take more concentrated wear than any other surface in the building, and they usually inherit whatever the bedrooms got rather than being chosen deliberately. That is a mistake worth avoiding. Stairs want a fiber that recovers, a construction that does not show a path, and an installation that wraps the nosing properly, because that front edge is where a stair carpet fails first.
