What a laminate plank is made of

A laminate board is four layers doing four jobs. At the bottom is a backing that balances the plank so it lies flat. Above that is the core, which is high density fiberboard and provides the structure. Above that sits the printed decorative layer, which is what you see. On top is a wear layer of clear melamine, which is what you actually walk on and what makes laminate as scratch resistant as it is.

That top layer is the reason laminate outperforms expectations on surface hardness. It is genuinely tough against scratching, which is why it holds up well in a house with dogs, and why it stays looking new through the kind of daily grit that dulls softer finishes. The old reputation was never really about scratching. It was about water and about how convincing the print looked.

Both of those problems got worked on

The print is the easier story. Higher resolution printing, longer pattern repeats before an image recurs, and surface texture that follows the grain of the printed board rather than running as a generic pattern have all moved a long way. Where the older product gave itself away by repeating visibly across a room, the better modern ones do not.

Water is the more important story and it needs stating precisely, because the marketing language in this category is slippery. Water resistant and waterproof are not the same claim, and they are not interchangeable. Modern water resistant laminate handles spills that get wiped up in a reasonable time, which covers ordinary life. It is not the same as a floor you can leave standing water on. How it compares to vinyl plank, honestly

These two categories compete directly and we sell both, so there is nothing to gain from tilting the answer. Laminate generally wins on surface scratch resistance and often feels more solid and more like wood underfoot, because its core is denser. Luxury vinyl plank generally wins on water, which is why it is what we recommend below grade, in full baths and in laundry rooms.

So the sensible split in a typical house is vinyl where the water is and laminate where the traffic is. A great many main levels would be well served by laminate and get vinyl by default, simply because vinyl is the category people have heard more about recently. If your rooms are dry and busy, laminate deserves to be on the shortlist.

Underlayment, sound and the hollow question

The complaint that a laminate floor sounds hollow is a fair one and it is almost always an installation matter rather than a product fault. Laminate floats rather than fastening down, so what is underneath it and how flat that surface is determine how it sounds. The right underlayment, correctly specified for what is below, changes the acoustics of a room noticeably. Some boards arrive with a pad already attached, which suits some situations and not others.

Flatness is the other half of it. A floating floor over a surface that is not flat will eventually announce itself underfoot. That is why the free in-home measure checks the subfloor before anything is recommended, and why any preparation needed goes into the quote rather than surfacing on install day.
