Luxury vinyl plank suits a Manchester house for reasons that have nothing to do with fashion. A city where the median house was finished in 1977 has decks that have settled, kitchens that were reworked in place, and lower levels sitting on concrete, and plank is forgiving of exactly those conditions. Forgiving is not the same as indifferent, though. The floor still has to start flat, still has to clear the appliances, and still has to meet whatever the rest of the level is doing. A kitchen floor in this stock often has an original sheet covering, an underlayment panel nailed over it in a later decade, and a second covering on top of that. Sometimes the cabinets sit on the original and the later floor was cut around them, which is the version that decides more than people expect. It sets how much height can be removed, whether the appliance bays will still admit an appliance afterwards, and whether the toe kick ends up buried.
