This is where expectations need setting honestly. A rigid core plank bridges minor variation. It does not level a floor, and it will not hide a dip. If the surface is out of flat by enough to matter, the fix is preparation, and preparation belongs in the quote rather than in a conversation on install day. Occasionally the honest recommendation in an old house is a different material entirely, and we would rather say that early.

What sits under a new one

In housing built since 2000 the subfloor is generally flat and predictable, and the decision moves back to the plank itself. Across a large open main level the visible seams run a long way without a doorway to break them, so plank width, edge detail and how convincingly the print repeats all become things you can actually see. In a house with more walls, none of that reads the same way.

The specifications that matter are mostly invisible in a photograph. The wear layer determines how the floor looks after years rather than weeks. The core determines how flat it lies and how solid it sounds. An attached pad softens the sound of a large hard-surfaced room. We will lay them out and put full size pieces beside them. Take the finalists home, stand them in the room, and look at them in daylight and again under the lamps you use at night. Two planks that were interchangeable in the store usually separate within a day of doing that.
