Tile is a system, not a surface

When people compare tile they compare tiles. The tile is the part least likely to go wrong. What decides whether a floor is still flawless in fifteen years is everything beneath and between: whether the substrate is rigid enough not to flex, whether it is flat enough for the size of piece going on it, whether movement in the building has somewhere to go, and how the tile is bonded down.

Cracked grout and the occasional cracked tile are almost never a fault in the tile. They are a structure underneath that moved when the tile could not. That is why a tile quote written without anyone looking at the floor is not really a quote. The free in-home measure is where the substrate gets assessed and where any preparation gets priced as part of the job.

Porcelain and ceramic are not the same thing

Both are fired clay, and the distinction is density. Porcelain is fired denser, absorbs very little water and is harder wearing, which is why it suits entries, mudrooms and anywhere that meets Missouri weather at the door. Ceramic is a little softer and easier to cut, and it is entirely adequate in a guest bath or a low traffic room. Neither is the correct answer everywhere, and paying for porcelain in a powder room is not always money well spent.

There is also a slip question that matters more than people think, particularly at an entry where wet boots arrive in January and around a tub or shower. Surface texture and finish affect grip, and a highly polished tile that looks beautiful in a showroom behaves differently underfoot when wet. We will point that out for the room you are describing rather than let you discover it.

Big tiles ask more of the floor

Large format tile is what most people now want and it carries a specific requirement. The bigger the piece, the flatter the surface underneath has to be, because a large rigid tile cannot follow a dip and will instead sit proud at one corner. That difference in height between neighbouring tiles is called lippage, and it is the single most common visible disappointment in a modern tile floor.

It is entirely avoidable. It requires the substrate to be brought properly flat first, which sometimes means preparation that a cheaper quote will have left out. If a price for large format tile looks unusually low, this is usually the line item that is missing. We would rather explain that in the showroom than have you find out at the doorway of a finished room.

Grout is a design decision

Grout colour changes the look of a tile floor more than almost any other choice, and it is frequently decided last and quickly. Matching the grout to the tile makes the floor read as one continuous surface. Contrasting it draws every joint and turns the layout into a pattern. Neither is wrong. Deciding by accident is. Bring a cabinet door and a photo of the room, and we will lay full size pieces out with grout options against them.

The lines we carry

Our tile selection runs across Virginia Tile, DalTile, MSI and Emser. Format, finish, slip characteristics and rectified edges vary considerably across those ranges, and a four inch sample tells you very little about how a large piece will read across a whole room.
