What is attached pad vinyl?

Attached pad vinyl is a plank with a thin layer of foam or cork already bonded to its underside at the factory. The pad is not there to cushion your feet. Its main job is acoustic, softening the hollow report a floating floor makes over a hard subfloor, and it removes the step of rolling out a separate underlayment.

Turn a vinyl plank over. If there is a thin skin of grey foam or brown cork bonded to the back of it, that plank is doing a job before it ever touches your subfloor, and it is not the job most people assume it is doing.

What the pad is actually doing down there

A floating floor sits loose. Nothing fastens it to anything, so every footstep, every dropped set of keys and every dog nail lands on a thin hard board with a hard subfloor directly beneath it. The assembly rings. That hollow report people describe as the giveaway of a floating floor is the ring, and it comes from the contact between two hard surfaces rather than from the vinyl itself.

An attached pad breaks that contact. Instead of core meeting subfloor across the whole room, there is a compressible layer between them absorbing part of the strike and damping the rest. Two things change at once. The sound of a footstep inside the room gets shorter and lower, and less of that footstep travels down through the structure into whatever is below. Manufacturers publish sound ratings for their padded builds, and those figures live on the product spec sheet, measured in a lab assembly rather than in your bonus room.

The softness underfoot is real and it is small. A bonded pad is thin on purpose, because a floating floor resting on something genuinely soft rocks at its joints. Anyone selling an attached pad on the promise that it will feel like carpet is overselling a layer that is doing acoustic work. If underfoot give is what you are after, it comes from the core instead, and the foamed WPC core is the honest place to look for it.

What that buys you in a real room

What the pad adds on top of that is this page's business. The comparison worth making is a padded plank against a bare one in the same empty room: the strike of a heel gets shorter, the ring behind it stops sooner, and voices stop hanging in the air quite so long. Furnish the room and a sofa, a rug and a bookcase all take over part of that work, which is why the pad earns the most in a basement that stays sparse and the least in one packed with soft furniture.

The other room where it earns its place is a floor over occupied space. A bonus room above a bedroom, an office above a family room, a second floor laundry. Impact sound travelling downward is harder to fix after the fact than almost anything else in a house, and the moment the floor goes in is the easiest moment to address it. It also removes a step and a decision. Without a bonded pad, a floating vinyl floor generally wants a separate underlayment rolled out first, which is another material to select, another thickness to account for at the doorways and another thing to get right. With the pad already attached, the plank arrives with that decision made and the installer has one less variable to manage.

Where an attached pad gets you in trouble

The common failure is stacking. If the plank already carries a pad, that is the pad, and a second layer rolled out beneath it lets the locking joints flex more than they were built for. The second problem is concentrated weight. A pad compresses under a piano leg, a loaded bookcase or a refrigerator, and unlike carpet pile it does not spring back over a weekend. The result is a small permanent settle at that spot, which can read as a dip or as a joint no longer sitting level with its neighbour. Wide furniture cups spread the load out. Small hard glides concentrate it.

The third is expectation. A pad is thin and compressible, which makes it the opposite of a levelling layer. It follows a hump rather than hiding one, and over a dip it lets the plank span unsupported exactly as a bare plank would. Flatness is subfloor work, and it gets checked in the room rather than assumed from the product.

Checking it on a sample

  • Turn the board over. Foam reads grey or white and springs back under a thumbnail. Cork reads brown and speckled and comes back more slowly.
  • Press a corner of the pad and hold it for a few seconds. A pad that stays dented after you let go will do the same thing under furniture.
  • Look at where the pad stops. On most boards it runs short of the locking edges so the joint sits on core rather than on foam. That is correct, not a defect.
  • Tap two padded boards together, then tap two bare boards from another line. The difference in tone is the entire argument for the pad and it is easier to hear than to describe.
  • Ask whether the same line is offered with and without the pad. Many are, and comparing the two in your hands settles the question faster than any spec sheet.

What the pad is not

It is not automatically a vapour barrier. Some attached pads include a film that also serves as a moisture retarder over concrete and some do not, and from above the two look identical. Over a slab that is the difference between an installation that meets the manufacturer's requirements and one that does not, so it is a question to ask by name rather than to assume. It is not a wear specification either. Nothing bonded to the underside of a plank affects how the top of it survives a dog, a dining chair or the grit that walks in off a driveway, which is decided by the clear layer above the print. A little, and less than people hope. Foam and cork both conduct heat poorly, so the surface of a padded plank sits closer to room temperature than a bare plank lying on a cold slab does. Under bare feet that is a noticeable difference. It is not the same thing as heat coming up from below, and it will not turn a cold basement into a warm one on its own.

Often, inside limits the manufacturer sets, because a pad is an insulating layer sitting between the heat source and the room. Some lines allow it with a maximum floor surface temperature and some exclude padded products altogether. Not the way a carpet pad does, because it is never walked on directly and it is not absorbing traffic at the surface. What it can do is take a permanent set under concentrated weight that never moves, which is why furniture cups under heavy stationary pieces matter more on a padded floor than they look like they should.
