What is a wood floor acclimating to?
Acclimating is wood coming into balance with the air it will live in, trading moisture until the two stop changing each other. The part people miss is the target. A board matched to a humid August is sitting at the wet end of its year. What you want is the middle of the swing that house holds across all four seasons.
Here is the belief worth correcting. People treat acclimating as matching the boards to the room as it is on the day they arrive, and treat the job as finished when the meter agrees with that room that afternoon. It is a reasonable thing to believe, everybody in the process talks that way, and it is also how a floor gets installed at one edge of its annual range with nobody doing anything wrong.
Why that belief exists
Everything about the procedure points at the present tense. Material is delivered into the space. The space is at living conditions. A reading gets taken this week and compared against another reading taken this week. The whole sequence is a snapshot, so it is natural to assume the snapshot is the target. Equilibrium moisture content, said properly
A board's moisture content is the weight of water in it stated as a percentage of what that same board would weigh bone dry. Because the board never stops trading that water with the air in whatever room it is sitting in, the figure is not really a property of the board at all. It describes a relationship, and it holds still only while the air does.
For any given combination of air temperature and relative humidity there is one moisture content at which the wood stops changing, because it is neither gaining nor losing. That settling point is the equilibrium moisture content for that air. Move the air and the point moves, and the wood follows it at its own pace, slowly, from the outside of the board inward. Which means wood has no correct moisture content in the abstract. It only has a correct moisture content for a particular house.
A Missouri house is not one climate
That is the whole problem, and it is sharper here than in a lot of the country. A Missouri year does not hand a house one set of conditions. It hands it a damp half and a dry half with the heat running, and unless something indoors is actively holding humidity steady, the air those rooms carry in February is a genuinely different environment from the air they carry in August. Two equilibrium points, in the same rooms, in the same year.
So a floor perfectly acclimated in August is perfectly acclimated to the wet end of its range. Its entire year of movement from that day forward runs in one direction, shrinking. A floor perfectly acclimated in January is sitting at the dry end, and everything ahead of it is growth pressing outward into whatever room the perimeter gap left. Both floors were acclimated. Neither was aimed at the middle. The aim is what this page is about, and the middle is where you want to be, because it halves the distance the boards have to travel in either direction.
What follows from aiming at the middle
- Run the house the way it is actually going to be run, and start before the material is delivered rather than after. If a humidifier is going on the furnace, it should be working while the boards are settling, not installed in December as a fix.
- Say out loud what the house does across a year. A house that swings hard is a different specification from a house that holds steady, and the season the job lands in is a real input to how the floor gets laid out, not a neutral detail.
- Let the season inform the material. Narrower boards give the swing less to work with, since the same percentage change produces fewer inches at a narrow face, which our entry on plank widths takes further.
- Where the house will not hold steady, the construction can do the work instead. A cross laminated core cancels most of the seasonal movement, which is the entire reason engineered hardwood exists as a category.
The meter, and the ways a reading goes wrong
None of this is visible, so it is measured. A pin meter drives two probes into a board and reads the electrical resistance between them, which changes with moisture. A pinless meter presses a plate against the face and reads a field into the wood without marking it. Both are good tools and both give a confident number whether or not the number means anything.
- Species correction. Different woods do not read alike, so a meter set for oak and used on hickory returns a wrong answer stated to a decimal place. The setting matters as much as the tool.
- Depth. A pinless meter reads through a thickness of material, so on a thin board it can pick up whatever is underneath, and a damp subfloor will pull the reading toward itself.
- Sample size. The outside boards of a stack have been meeting room air the longest. One reading off the top board of the top bundle describes that board. Several readings, from several boards, out of several cartons, describe the delivery.
- The other half of the comparison. The subfloor gets read too, and the allowed spread between the two is printed in the installation instructions for that specific floor. The allowance is tighter for wide boards than for narrow strip, for the same reason wide boards show a season more plainly.
The reading that happens before anything is ordered
Most of this belongs to install week, but the part that decides whether the job is straightforward or complicated happens much earlier. At the free in-home measure the subfloor gets looked at rather than assumed: wood or concrete, how flat it is, how dry it is, how sound it feels underfoot. A slab that is passing vapor upward changes the recommendation before anyone talks about acclimation, and that is the moment to mention the room that flooded once, the crawlspace, the humidifier that has never worked and the season you are hoping to install in.
Then the answer is a product recommendation rather than a rule of thumb. Sometimes it is solid wood in a house that holds steady. Boards arriving in a humid stretch and boards arriving in a dry one are starting from different places, and the house they are settling into is also behaving differently. The control that matters is running the house at its normal conditions well before delivery, which makes the season much less important than it sounds.
The weight of water in that board as a percentage of its bone dry weight, at the spot the meter touched, corrected for that species if whoever is holding it set the correction. It is not a property of the shipment and it is not permanent. It is a single reading, off a single board, taken on a single afternoon, which is why several of them get taken.
Because the movement is proportional to the width. A board that swells or shrinks by the same small percentage gains or loses far more across a wide face than a narrow one, so an error that a strip floor absorbs invisibly turns into a visible gap on a wide plank floor. Same mistake, bigger consequence.
