Flooring Correct measures and installs at Defiance addresses in the southwest corner of St. Charles County, 18.6 road miles south southeast of the Wentzville showroom and about 30 minutes of driving. Defiance has never been incorporated. St. Charles County's own Political Subdivisions page lists every municipality in the county, from the City of St. Charles to the City of West Alton, and Defiance does not appear on it, while its immediate neighbors Augusta and New Melle do. Estimates are free, the measure happens at your address, and the phone is 636-332-0654.

Why this page carries no population figure

Our other town pages lean on Census figures: housing units, the decade they went up in, how many are owner occupied. Defiance is small enough that those readings come back from the American Community Survey with margins of error wider than any conclusion you could draw from them, and a number the Census Bureau itself cannot pin down stops being a fact the moment it is printed as one. So this page prints none. What follows comes from documents that name Defiance directly: the county's plans and park pages, the state's park and historic listings, and the State Historical Society of Missouri's place names file.

A village on paper, with no city hall to point at

The St. Charles County Agri-Tourism Land Use Plan, a master plan amendment for the southwestern portion of the county dated August 2012, designates Defiance and Matson 'village developments within the planning boundaries of the plan', and groups them with the town of Augusta in an Agri-Tourism land use category. Among the characteristics the plan seeks for those village developments are 'compactness and tight form' with 'the highest densities closest to the village center along Route 94'. The plan lists its implementing Agri-Tourism zoning district as proposed.

So Defiance is planned for without being governed as a city. For a homeowner calling about floors that is mostly trivia with one practical edge: there is no street grid to count blocks along, so directions run on road names, and the road name is the first thing we ask for.

About 1.013 square miles, and an address that reaches much further

The mapped community covers roughly 1.013 square miles. A Defiance mailing address covers a great deal more ground than that. St. Charles County gives Broemmelsiek Park a Defiance address out on Highway DD, and the county's August 2012 plan sets its own study area along Highway 94 South 'beginning at a point east of Hwy DD where the property lines of Weldon Spring Conservation Area and the University of Missouri Conservation Area properties intersect Hwy 94 South.' Two houses carrying the same town line on the envelope can sit a long way apart, on different roads and at different elevations, with entirely different problems under the floor.

The corridor the whole trip runs on

The same plan treats Highway 94 South as its baseline and calls it 'the main transportation arterial into and through this area.' Describing the corridor segment that holds Matson and Defiance, it says the views from the highway 'range from heavily vegetative areas extending up to the right-of-way, large open expanses of farm land within the 100 year flood plain, hills and the village areas of Matson and Defiance.' Route F meets Route 94 at Defiance and runs west from there up the valley of Femme Osage Creek.

18.6 road miles and about 30 minutes is the honest pair of numbers for this trip, and we schedule against the 30 rather than the 18.6: one arrival window, one visit covering every room you are considering, and samples that go home with you at the end of it.

Central water, and no public sewer as of the county's 2012 plan

Defiance has centrally supplied water, and the supplier named in county planning is St. Charles County Public Water Supply District No. 2. That same August 2012 plan still described a sanitary sewer system as something that would have to be added, so the village at that date was on central water without public sewer. That may have moved since. We raise it because it is the fingerprint of a community that filled in property by property rather than in platted phases, which is why your house may have little in common with the one down the road.

Steep ground, heavy trees, and a creek that drains east

The State Historical Society of Missouri's Ramsay Place Names File records that Femme Osage Creek 'flows east through Femme Osage Township in St. Charles County, to empty into the Missouri River near Hamburg.' The ground on either side of it is not flat. St. Charles County built its park here around that fact: Matson Hill Park on Stub Road carries natural surface and gravity-flow mountain bike trails, and the park contains an 1830s stone dwelling once owned by a grandson of Daniel Boone.

The name records an argument, and the Boone connection is documented

The Ramsay Place Names File records that Defiance was named by Robert Lee Fulkerson because local people were angry with Harve Matson, who promoted the town of Matson, and that Defiance has had a post office since the 1890s. The Boone connection nearby is documented rather than folklore. The National Register nomination records that Daniel Boone was appointed commandant of the Femme Osage district, that he later testified he had moved to his son Nathan's around 1804, and that Nathan Boone was forced in 1837 to sell his home and land in the Femme Osage Valley to pay a debt.

St. Charles County Parks acquired that property from Lindenwood University, renamed the park Lindenwood Park, and operates The Historic Daniel Boone Home on Highway F alongside a reconstructed nineteenth century village. Those village buildings were brought in from elsewhere; the Old Peace Chapel was moved there in 1983. Missouri State Parks records four National Register listings in the Defiance vicinity, three of them on Highway F, and notes one of the four, the Wolf-Ruebeling House on Highway 94, was destroyed by fire around 1985.

A Katy Trail town with a deliberately plain trailhead

Defiance sits on the Katy Trail, on the corridor of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, and Missouri State Parks lists it as offering bike rental and repair, camping, food, lodging, parking, restrooms, water and shuttle services. The access itself is plain: the state calls it the Defiance Access, level gravel parking with very easy entry onto the trail and no accessible restrooms, while the Matson and Augusta trailheads on either side each offer an information depot and an accessible vault toilet.

Missouri Wine and Grape Board presents a Defiance region of Missouri Wine Country and lists Cedar Lake Cellars, Chandler Hill Vineyards, Defiance Ridge Vineyards and Sugar Creek Winery under it. That is the Defiance visitors meet. The one we meet is a house at the end of a road.

The road name comes before the room count

We ask for the road name, the crossroad and anything a truck should know before it commits to your drive. Then we walk the whole house in one visit, checking level, looking at what is already down and at what is under it, and writing out every transition, threshold and stair. The number is built from what was measured rather than from what is typical, since typical is the one thing this community does not offer.

One boundary worth confirming yourself: a point at the center of the community returns Francis Howell R-III from the Census Bureau's unified school district boundary layer. If you are buying rather than renovating, check that against the district's own attendance zones.

The three material pages written for Defiance

For the wider picture, the St. Charles County page sets Defiance beside the rest of the county, and the in-home measure page covers exactly what happens on the visit. Flooring Correct is family owned, Jonah Paup runs it with his wife Audra, and we hold 140 Google reviews at a 5.0 average.

“The job was done quickly and done very well- thanks Randy. ... All in all, it was a good experience with Flooring Correct. I would recommend them to anyone”

Because the Census estimate for a community this small carries a margin of error too wide to publish honestly. We would rather say nothing than print a figure the Census cannot pin down.

No. It is unincorporated, and St. Charles County's Political Subdivisions page lists every municipality in the county without listing Defiance, though its neighbors Augusta and New Melle appear.

Yes. A Defiance mailing address reaches well past the mapped community, out along Highway DD and the roads off Route F and Route 94. Give us the road name and the crossroad.

Then we look before saying anything. Houses along that road went up individually across a very long span, so age, framing and what is already on the floor get checked in person.

Everything in the showroom. Carpet, solid hardwood and luxury vinyl plank each have a page for this town, and the rest gets covered on the visit or by phone at 636-332-0654.

Send the rooms and the road name. We drive the 18.6 miles out, walk the house, and write the numbers down at your address, because nothing about an unincorporated community on the Femme Osage measures the same twice.
