Josephville is a village in the literal, legal sense. St. Charles County's own directory of political subdivisions lists it as a village rather than a city, and records it with no village hall. Inside its 2.865 square miles the Census counts 226 housing units, a population that moved from a 2020 base of 477 to a 2024 estimate of 517, and a median year built of 1986. A place this size does not produce projects on a schedule, so when one comes up it tends to be a whole house.

One of two villages on the county's municipal list

Almost everything else around here is a city. On the county's official list of political subdivisions, Josephville is one of only two municipalities classified as a village, the other being Weldon Spring Heights, which incorporated in 1950. Apart from the Town of Augusta, every other municipality on that list is a city. Josephville itself did not incorporate until the 1970s, which is the part people find odd: the settlement is old and the municipality is young.

A village of this kind keeps little administrative machinery between a homeowner and the county, and the paper trail shows it. FEMA's countywide Flood Insurance Study lists the community as Josephville, Village of, with a footnote explaining that its map dates came from the Unincorporated Areas of St. Charles County.

Streets kept under a county contract

Josephville does not run a street department. It is one of the small municipalities that contracts with the St. Charles County Highway Department for street maintenance, unlike Wentzville, O'Fallon and Lake Saint Louis, which maintain their own. So the authority on a shoulder, a closure or the approach to your driveway is the county, not a village public works desk.

The county has a series of phased projects to improve Josephville Road from Missouri Highway A to Route P, and its plans for the work include widening and resurfacing the existing roadway, improving sight distance along the corridor, enhancing drainage facilities, adding shoulders, and improving curves at Kersting Road and Wortman Road. As of the county's update dated November 26, 2024, the project sat in right-of-way acquisition.

At the north end of the county's Phase 1 stretch, just south of Highway P, a structurally deficient bridge is being replaced with a 10-foot wide by 9-foot tall double box culvert, with the road profile raised to improve an existing severe vertical curve and paved shoulders added. The county closed that bridge on May 11, 2026, and an update dated May 20, 2026 put the work at about four months. If you are on the far side of it, say so when you book.

226 homes, and what a median of 1986 means

81.0 percent of Josephville's housing is single-unit detached and 79.0 percent of occupied homes are lived in by their owners. Set that beside a median year built of 1986 and a particular house appears: freestanding, on its own ground, four decades into its life, and held long enough by one household that whatever went down first has usually been taken up once already.

MoDOT's own community map of Josephville shows two layers of street names side by side: the old family roads, Josephville Road itself, Lindhorst Lane, Freymuth Road and Kiel Lane, plus Kersting Road and Wortman Road from the county's project documents, and then a dense subdivision layer in which nearly every street carries the word Brook, from Bay Brook to Misty Brook to Sunshine Brooke. Two layers of streets means two layers of houses.

The church the parish baked its own brick for

The parish that gave the place its name is why Josephville does not read like Wentzville or Lake Saint Louis. St. Joseph Parish's own history says the church has been called the area's oldest homemade church, and explains the phrase precisely. Clay for the bricks was dug from the brick yard pond, an area of red clay on the farm across the road from the church. The bricks were baked on the spot on Leonard Rothermich's farm. Lumber for the floors and the communion rail came from the trees of parishioners' farms, and local masons and carpenters did the work.

Before the brick building there was a log church measuring 26 by 59 feet, put up after Anton Kersting donated farmland to the congregation. The cornerstone of the present church was laid under Father Theodore Krainhardt, and the finished building was dedicated by Rev. Henry Muehlsiepen, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. It has been hit twice in the same place since: lightning struck the northwest corner one May, and six weeks later a tornado struck that corner, damaging the church so badly it was thought beyond repair.

Peruque Creek is the only stream on the map

MoDOT's official community map of Josephville carries exactly one stream label, and it is Peruque Creek. The Peruque Creek Watershed Management Action Plan, posted in St. Charles County's document center, names the Village of Josephville as one of eight municipalities with jurisdiction over their respective portions of that watershed, alongside Warrenton, Wright City, Foristell, Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, O'Fallon and St. Paul.

Schmuckers Store, Allen's Prairie and a name that is not settled

According to St. Joseph Parish's own history, the community began in the early 1800s as a mail stop and mercantile known as Schmuckers Store in Allen's Prairie, on land the parish says was ceded through a Federal Grant under President Martin Van Buren by Joseph Allen in about 1837. Allen settled on a farm and, with other French and English settlers from the Virginias, made improvements, erected buildings, then sold up and moved on.

The permanent settlers were mostly German. The parish names Anton Kersting, who purchased the Allen property and held church services in his log home, which the parish's website describes as still standing on Highway P. It was about then, the parish says, that the area began to be known as Josephville. David W. Eaton's compilation of Missouri place names for the State Historical Society of Missouri spells it Josephsville and states it was named in honor of Joseph Wilmer, its first postmaster and a merchant. No alternative account has been verified from a checkable source, so the honest version is the plain one: the village is named for an early postmaster and merchant named Joseph.

Mail says Wentzville, the village says Josephville

St. Joseph Church and its preschool, both on Josephville Road, use Wentzville 63385 mailing addresses. The Archdiocese of St. Louis lists the parish on Josephville Road in Wentzville 63385, and the parish's own website lists St. Joseph Preschool the same way.
