Flooring Correct measures and fits luxury vinyl plank throughout Dardenne Prairie, a seventeen minute run east southeast of the Wentzville showroom. Half of this city, 50.3 percent of it, went up between 2000 and 2009, and houses from that decade share a particular condition: the main level reads as one room, so a single floor has to satisfy the kitchen, the dining space and the family room at once. No doorway to change the floor at

A doorway is the polite place for one material to end and another to start. Housing from Dardenne Prairie's dominant decade mostly does without them across the main level. The kitchen opens to the dining space, the dining space opens to the family room, and the only real division is a cabinet run or an island. Once the doorways are gone the natural stopping point goes with them, and the question stops being which floor you like and becomes which single floor can hold three jobs at the same time without looking like a compromise in any of them.

That is the situation vinyl plank keeps getting recommended for, and it is exactly why we will not agree to it automatically. A floor that has to be right in a working kitchen and right in a family room, seen from the front hall and from the back windows, is being asked more than a floor that only has to be right in one closed room. The way to test that is to stand in the actual space with a full size piece down, not to take anybody's word for it.

The sightline in these plans is longer than the sample rack suggests

When a floor runs uninterrupted from the entry through to the rear windows, you take in a length of it at once rather than a room's worth. That changes what you notice. Pattern repeat, invisible in a bathroom, becomes obvious when the same grain figure turns up four times in one view. Plank width reads differently down a long run than it does clipped to a display board. Direction matters most of all, because boards laid across the short dimension cut a long space into stripes, and boards laid down its length pull it together.

None of that is judgeable from a photograph or a six inch swatch. It gets judged in your own room, looking down the sightline your own plan gives you, which is the practical reason the measure happens in the house rather than over the phone. It is also why we would rather hand you large samples than small ones.

Flatness and height, not archaeology

A main level here usually carries one generation of covering rather than four. That is the working advantage of a city with a median year built of 2004: there is a builder specification underfoot, laid once, and what sits below it is the subfloor rather than two more floors' worth of history. So the measure in Dardenne Prairie is rarely an excavation. It is a flatness check and a height check, and those two findings decide more about how a plank floor turns out than the plank itself does.

Flatness matters because a floating floor reports whatever it is lying on and will move where the subfloor dips. Height matters because it governs every edge of the run: the bottom riser of the staircase, the threshold into a bath, the clearance under a dishwasher and the gap beside a range if the kitchen is part of the same field of plank. Those numbers get taken and written down at the estimate, not discovered by a crew on install morning.

Where the run has to stop anyway

Even an open plan has edges. If your house has a second floor, the staircase usually lands in the open space rather than behind a door, and a field of plank ends at the bottom riser. What happens at that riser is a decision, not a default, and it belongs in the conversation before anything is ordered rather than after. Upstairs the argument changes completely, and in most of these houses it turns back toward carpet in the bedrooms.

Wet rooms and any below grade space are separate questions again. Tile earns the bathrooms in plenty of these houses. If the room you are asking about is a lower level, carpet tile deserves a hearing before plank is assumed into it. We will say plainly when the material you came in asking for is the wrong one for the room.

Seventeen minutes is close enough for two sample runs
