What is the Janka hardness scale?
Janka is a laboratory test of how well a wood species resists denting. A steel ball is driven into a prepared sample until the wood closes around it to the ball's midpoint, and the load that took is the species rating. It is a rank order rather than a precise score, and the published figure belongs on the manufacturer spec sheet.
Hardness is the specification people latch onto, because it is the only one that arrives as a number and a number feels like it settles something. It settles one thing precisely and four things not at all, and it arrives with conditions attached that almost nobody reads. Knowing which is which is the difference between using a rating and being used by one.
The test itself, which is the whole definition
Janka is a laboratory procedure rather than an opinion. A steel ball of a fixed size is driven into a prepared sample of wood until the wood has closed around it to the ball's midpoint, and the load required to get it there is recorded. That load, expressed as a force, is the species rating. Nothing else is observed and nothing else is inferred. The figure for whatever species you are considering belongs on the manufacturer literature rather than in anybody's memory, including ours.
What the rating predicts is resistance to a point load, and whether that matters in your house is a different question from what the number is. That one is settled on how hard your hardwood floor should be. This entry stays on the specification: what the test does, why two tables disagree about the same wood, and which face of the board a figure came off. The rating belongs to the species rather than to the plank, which means it applies just as much to the sawn face of an engineered board as it does to a solid one.
Why two published tables disagree about the same wood
People treat a Janka figure like a serial number, and it is closer to a measurement with conditions attached. Four of those conditions move the result, and none of them is a defect in the test.
- Moisture content. Wood is stiffer dry and softer damp, so the same species tested at two different moisture contents returns two different loads. A table worth reading states the condition it used. The ones that do not are the ones to trust least.
- Which face took the load. A ball driven into the side of a board and a ball driven into the cut end are two different measurements, and the end grain result is the larger of the two. Flooring figures are side hardness, because the side is the face you walk on.
- Which trees. A species is a population rather than a specimen. Growth rate, region and where in the trunk a board came from all move the result, so a published figure is a central value for a spread rather than a promise about your carton.
- Which species, exactly. Trade names travel loosely, and several woods sold under one common name are not one botanical species. Two tables can both be honest and still be describing different trees.
None of that makes the scale useless. It makes it a rank order rather than a score. Treat a small gap between two species as noise and a large gap as real, and stop trying to read precision out of a figure that was never delivered with any.
The four things the number does not measure
Four properties get credited to hardness that hardness has nothing to do with, and every one of them is settled somewhere else.
- Scratch resistance. A scratch is damage to the finish rather than to the wood, and finish is a separate specification. The factory finish page covers what takes that damage on a prefinished floor.
- Visibility. Grain, texture and sheen decide how much of a mark you can actually see from the doorway, and they do more of that work than hardness does. Grade is a separate specification and it does most of the hiding.
- Stability. Hardness says nothing about how far a species moves as indoor humidity swings across a Missouri year, and movement is what produces gaps and cupping. That is a moisture question rather than a hardness one.
- Construction. Janka rates a species, not a build. What the layers under the face change is covered on the construction page, and it is a separate decision from which tree the face came off.
What chasing the number costs you
Hardness is not free, and the trades are not the ones most people expect.
- The color range narrows. A species is the color it is, and climbing the scale walks you off the woods that take stain evenly. White oak accepts stain about as predictably as any domestic wood. Maple is hard and it blotches under stain, which is a genuine downside people meet after installation rather than before.
- Grain gets louder or quieter, not better. Moving up the scale changes how busy a board looks at least as much as it changes how well the board resists a dent, and busy is a taste rather than an upgrade. The species ordering, and what each one's grain does for wear, is settled on the live answer.
- Harder wood is often more brittle at an edge, so a chip at a bevel or a stair nosing can read sharper and more obvious than a soft dent ever would have.
- Very hard imported species can be difficult to work with and hard to match years later when one board has to come out. Exotic species carry their own considerations well beyond a rating.
The one comparison the scale is genuinely good for
Used narrowly, the scale earns its place. Take the two or three species you have already shortlisted on looks and put their ratings beside each other, taken from sheets that measured the same way. That comparison is meaningful, because you are asking a real question about two real candidates for one real room, and the answer either changes your mind or it does not.
Used broadly, it misleads. Scanning a whole table from softest to hardest and picking near the top produces a species chosen by a laboratory rather than by anybody who has to live in the room. It also drags people past woods they would have loved. Softwoods sit far down the scale and people still floor houses in them on purpose, because pine takes dents and turns them into the look people wanted from pine in the first place. A floor that is allowed to record a life is a legitimate choice, not a mistake.
So use the figure the way it was built to be used. Ask for it on the spec sheet of the two boards you are already holding, read it as a rank rather than a score, and check which face it came off before you set it beside anything. Driving a ball into the cut end of a board loads the fibres along their length, which resists far more than loading them across their width does, so an end grain result runs higher. Flooring figures are side hardness, because the side is the face you walk on. If a table does not say which it used, treat it as unusable rather than as roughly right.
At the surface, yes, because the rating belongs to the species and the face of an engineered board is that species, sawn off a log. What changes is what sits underneath. A thin wood face over a light core has less material to spread a point load through than a thick face over a dense one, so the build is worth reading as its own line on the spec sheet rather than folded into the species figure.
